"Kidney stones typically leave the body by passage in the urine stream, and many stones are formed and passed without causing symptoms. If stones grow to sufficient size before passage—on the order of at least 2-3 millimeters—they can cause obstruction of the ureter."
"There are various measures that can be used to encourage the passage of a stone. These can include increased hydration, medication for treating infection and reducing pain, and diuretics to encourage urine flow and prevent further stone formation."
Another option is Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), which uses externally-applied sound waves in an attempt to break up the stones into bits small enough to pass with the urine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithotriptor
If that doesn’t work, surgical intervention might be necessary.
