It’s been about 5 hours since I had a chalazion (cyst in my eyelid) removed surgically in-office. This is the second time I’ve had one removed, but this time I feel something went wrong. The procedure was the same and I was given 2 injections of Lidocaine to numb the area, the cyst was removed, and a patch was placed over my eye.
The procedure itself definitely hurt a lot more this time than the last time, even after the area was supposed to be entirely numb. But it wasn’t until about 20 to 30 minutes afterward when I arrived home, that things started falling apart. It felt as though the Lidocaine had completely worn off, but I know from many many many past procedures that it is typically supposed to last about 2 or 3 hours. The pain was agonizing. To put it in perspective, I’ve had kidney stones (which had to be surgically removed), a broken leg, 3 liver biopsies, I get an upper GI endoscopy every year, and have had probably hundreds of other hospitalizations and procedures in my life. This was BY FAR the most excruciating thing I have ever dealt with – and I know from the last chalazion removal that this sort of pain is not normal.
It took about an hour after the procedure before the oxycodone they prescribed kicked in (I had to take 15mg to feel ok), but until that point my body was uncontrollably shaking from the pain, I was rocking back and forth debating on going to the ER, and I could not move my eyes to look at things without severe pain shooting through my head. It was so bad, that whole side of my face hurt. Definitely level 10 pain.
So my question is – am I wrong in thinking that this level of pain is abnormal for a procedure like this? Like, is it possible there was something wrong with the Lidocaine, since it seemed to be weak in the first place and only lasted about half an hour? Also curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing as me. Thanks in advance
It occurred to me that it might have something to do with the eye patch possibly being too tight against my eyelid…though it still seems like it shouldn’t hurt as bad as it did.
Talked to my doctor when it was all happening and he seemed to think it was all in my head. Told me to darken the room and put a cold towel on my head… He also said it was probably a bad idea to go to the ER for pain management because I had (at that point) already taken the oxycodone. I should add that I feel significantly better now, but that is primarily because of the pain-killers I’ve been taking – my eye still hurts a bit even with the narcotics.
