I went to the ER on Tuesday w/ pain from kidney stones. I had them once before, back in October 2005, so I recognized the pain immediately. I was given IV w/ pain meds til the pain was under control. Then sent home w/ pain meds til I passed the stone(s), which I did a couple of days later.
But the ER dr said the scan showed I have at least one stone in each kidney. I know I need to see a urologist to talk about the stones, but I cant see one til June 16th. My husband and I REALLY want to get pregnant soon. Would it be horrible if we got pregnant before I could see the urologist? Or should we wait to try afterwards…even if it means having a baby much later than we wanted. Of course, we would still be happy but it would make things harder timing-wise (ie my sister’s wedding and my husbands work).
Anyone had stones during pregnancy?
Is it possible the stones would just stay in my kidneys thru the pregnancy and I could deal w/ them afterwards?
I am not afraid that having them will affect my chances of getting pregnant. Just wondering if we should wait to try until we’ve had the stones taken care of?
Or is there a chance when I am pregnant they will just stay in my kidneys and I wont have to deal w/ them til after the birth (and nursing)?

I had it confirmed via ER that the stone is in my left ureter (?) I was in such pain they sent me home with pain meds. The Dr said it was 2mm and should pass. He said to take the pain meds around the clock for the first 24 hours than as needed the following days. So yesterday I took the meds, no pain, only some pressure in kidney area and burning with urination. I filtered my urine all day and found nothing. Today, no pain meds, no pain, no pressure and no burning. Is there a chance it passed and I missed it? Up until today I have been drinking alot and only today have I been peeing alot. I was actually surprised on how little I was peeing yesterday, but it is flowing now… is that a sign that the stone has passed? This is my first kidney stone, I am not sure what all the "signs" mean.

I have a friend that has IC and also gets kidney stones a lot. She has been to doctors and they do very little to help her. She takes elmiron for the IC but the doctors don’t give her anything else. When the pain in unbearable she can’t tell if it’s kidney stones or an IC flare up so she goes to the ER but they usually just tell her she as a UTI and send her on her way with antibiotics. Sometimes she gets pain meds but it seems like the doctors don’t know what to do with her. She has a hard time working because of pain. She is only 32 years old and it seems like the doctors think she is too young to be having problems like this. I have been with her many times and seen how she gets treated and I just don’t understand how they could be that way. It seems like they don’t know anything about the disease or that she is making up how bad she hurts. She just needs help if anyone has any advice. She just went to the doctor the other day and he just blew her off basically and once again gave her a script for an antibiotic for a UTI. She has been diagnosed with IC about 2 years ago, but she has had problems with kidney stones since she was about 18. We have looked on the internet for info on IC and read everything there is to read, but if anyone has any info on maybe what meds she needs to ask about or something. Hopefully she can find a doctor to listen to her so far she hasn’t had any luck with that. Please only serious answers this is a serious question.

(I am a woman, if it matters)
The other day I had the most excruciating pain, turns out it was a kidney stone, They said I have 2 tiny stones. After a lot of pain med through an iv, they sent me home, lots of pain after it wore off. I was given antibiotics and oxycodone and ibprufen. I havent needed the pain meds since Sunday, 7pm. But now the other side of my back hurts… no severe pain in my belly yet.

I was thinking the other stone is in the other kidney? Anyway, is it possible this other one will pass soon? Or months later? What can I do?

I was in the ER 12 days ago and the stone was high in the ureter, now it has moved all the way down to the urethra and it is attempting to get out or is stuck, I dont know. What I do know is the pain is almost unbearable and I am taking a strong narcotic along with a medicine for nausea. I have seen a urologist, but I have no health insurance so we are trying to manage with pain meds and lots of water, the alternative is surgery, a huge hospital bill and physician bill. I just dont know how much longer i can take this pain…does anyone have ANY suggestions, or is surgery my only alternative at this point?

42/female/5 ft tall & 130 lbs
For the last two months I have had a pain in my lower left pelvic/groin area (almost where upper leg and body meet on left side) and sometimes radiating up hip and into left flank. It almost *always* hurts when I am sitting, and is better or gone when standing or lying down. Not bad enough for pain meds, but it hurts. Pain just started one day – hasn’t gotten any worse, but still there.

In the last two months I’ve had:

UTI test from PCP – positive, so given antibiotics.
Annual blood work-up – normal.
UTI test 10 days later-negative, but hurting. Sent for abdominal/pelvic CT scan with oral contrast.
CT scan showed 2mm and 1 1/2mm stone in left kidney.
Referred to Urologist – UTI test positive again, so 10 days antibiotics & a strainer.
2nd urologist appt – still positive. More antibiotics.
3rd urologist appt – No uti. Scope of bladder – normal, but he didn’t do another xray.

OB/GYN – pelvic and pap – results normal. OB said "Classic kidney stone pain. Kidney stones are horrible". He mashed around on my ovary – no pain or sensitivity and he said didn’t see a need for ultrasound to check for cyst since I just had a ct scan.

So… I was supposed to have another urologist appt tomorrow, but they rescheduled it for end of month. I think I’m just getting depressed, and haven’t passed either stone as far as I know. :(

If you have had kidney stones, does this sound like normal pain? Are there any other tests I should have at this point? A different doctor? I’m not sure, and I just feel helpless and a little hopeless at this point. Thanks for any help or direction.

I have been having problems with kidney ,UTI and bladder infections for a couple of months. I took medicine and they still came back and I was still having problems urinating. This past saturday I had to go to the emergency room because I had the worst pain in my right side. The doctors told me that I had a Kidney stone. I have been taking the pain meds perscribed since saturday morning.Today is the first day that I have not taken them. So how long do you think it takes for them to move? Because I have not really felt much pain since I left the hospital.

I went to the doctor for pain around my right kidney. I thought it was a kidney stone. They tested for it, that was not what I have. They sent me to the hospital for a CT Scan (at this point vomiting is occuring). CT Scan came back as a ruptured ovarian cyst. Blood Test came back with higher than normal white blood cells. Doctor hospitalized me until the white lood cells become normal amount, then sent me home with lots of pain meds. They did an ultra sound on my abdomen. Nothing abnormal. Any suggestions? Pain is severe, I wake up in tears from the pain.

Hi,

I have a problem and I don’t know what it’s called or if anyone else has had this problem. The reason I don’t know what it is, is cause the Dr’s. pretty much gave up on me. It started 10yrs ago. First, I have a kidney disease called Medullary sponge kidney. Lots of stones and lots of lithotripsy’s. But that’s not the problem. I started getting severe cramping that led to diarrhea on a daily basis. In 1 month I lost 20lbs. The second month, I lost another 20lbs. The doctors sent me to a gastrointestinal doctor, where he tried to do a colonoscopy. That didn’t go very well. While awake he tried to pump 10 lbs of air into me. I could only handle 1lbs. Why? Cause I was screaming to make him stop. By the time I had got to that doctor, I was going in everyday for IV’s. For re-hydration. Water wouldn’t even stay in me. I would take Imodium3 to 4x a day on a regular basis just to go to pick my son up from school. And even when I would drink water the cramping was so severe that my insides felt like they were bruised. It would take up to 3 days later to feel less bruised. Finally the gastrointestinal doctor sent me to the pain clinic. They put me on 5mg of oxycodone 4x’s a day. And finally I was able to eat and drink anything I wanted. The problem is: I’ve been on pain meds since that day. And when I’ve tried to go off of them, the intense, severe, cramping and bruising comes back. There is no pain like it. I rather have a kidney stone then to have even 1 episode of whatever this is. I’ve gained weight. Lots of it. And I know all I have to do is stop the pain meds and I’ll lose weight. But it’s not worth it. There is nothing in this world worth that pain. I have had to stay in motels because of traveling issues. Cramping in the middle of nowhere, ruining my vacations, missing important dates, everything. And if taking pain meds help keep it at bay, then so be it. But I want to know what it is. And the only way I can get another Dr. to do tests is to go off the medicine and have it start all over again. That’s why I’m hoping someone out there can give me a clue as to what it might be. I don’t think I ever seen blood in my stools except from going so often and being raw. A long time ago, I seen a study that was done where they were talking about the difference between IBS and another disease and the IBS didn’t fit what was happening but the other one said pain meds will stop it. Unfortunately, I can’t find that article any longer. And my new Dr. doesn’t understand why I don’t want to go off of pain meds. So I need help as soon as possible. If he takes me off the pain meds, I would rather die then go through that pain again. I need some information to show him that this is real. The pain Dr. that I had, left the state and is no longer taking care of me. And this new Dr. is anti-pain medicine. Even if it helps. Please please help. I’m running out of time. Oh and I had test done to see if there was an infection or some kind of bug that was causing this and all test came back negative. There is actually a worm that gets into your intestines that can cause problems and they even checked for that. That too came back negative. Thank goodness!!

I really hope someone out there can help me?

Thank you,
Andrea K.

was curious for other people that have had kidney stones, how long did it take for you to pass them, and how long were you out of commission for, i have two young children and i can’t afford to be on these pain meds for too long, they make me really loopy, but without them i feel like i am gonna die. So i was just wondering how long it normally takes to pass a stone. thanks for your answers, and for those of you who have had this i feel sorry for you i wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy, this pain is worse than my labor was!!

I went to the E.R. the other day because I was in a lot of pain. I recieved a catscan and they later told me I had two kidney stones. They said one was in the urethra, and the other in my bladder. They gave me pain meds and sent me home. I slept all day and night from the morphine they gave me at the hospital. I woke up the next morning not hurting at all. Two days later I’m still not hurting. They told me to contact a urologist and make an appointment, which I did, but the he is out and they have to call me back. Could I have passed the stones without knowing, or is this normal and should still see the urologist?

My first kidney stone was horrifyingly painful & it was 1cm (10mm). Didn’t need any treatments other than lots of pain meds, and it passed on it’s own. Had 2 more that must have been smaller because they weren’t nearly as painful & passed easily. Now I’ve got another 1cm stone that they are going to do lithotripsy on because it isn’t even fitting into the ureter this time.

PS – I also just had a gallstone removed that was 1 1/3 inches X 1 inch.

Now if only I could make diamonds….!
I can’t believe some people crying about their 1mm stone! Boo hoo!
LOL. I should’ve known the guys would play the penis card!

I am fighting with my third kidney stone in 2 years. stones dont relly run in my family but kidney problems do. luckily this one im fighting with now is small enough to pass on its own. the others were not. i dont have insurance so i just went down to the e.r. for this one. they identified it as a stone and said it would pass on its own in about 3 days and gave me pain meds. but nobody has relly told me how to prevent them. since this is my third i think its time to start doing some preventative actions. i know drink lots of water a day sure. but how much exactly? what should i eat and not eat? dose anybody know? oh by the way all three times they were calcium oxelate stones if that helps. well any tips for me?

I have a history of kidney stones, but when I have an episode of stones the pain is constant. The pain is equal to that of stones, but goes away in the afternoon (I have pain meds from my last episode). The next morning I wake with the same seething pain.

I remember anatomy in college, but forget some of the part locations in the abdominal cavity.

Any help?

Any help would be helpful. A ct scan showed 6 days ago that I had a kidney stone on the left. Pain was outragous and like nothing I have ever left and lasted for 2 days. Was sent home to wait for it to pass with meds and strainer. As the days have passed I have not noticed a stone or even grit etc in my urine, but the pain is no where close to what it was. It even comes and goes and is a lot lower (groin region, hip and side pain) but I dont even need pain meds to control it. Could it be that I passed it and I didnt even realize I have done so? Or that is stuck or in the bladder waiting to expelled? This is the first 1 I have ever had and wasnt told how big it was just that it was "small". I will be calling doctor again once office is open again, was just kidda curious. Thanks in advance. If it matters female/28

yesterday morning i left school for what i thought was just a hardcore gas bubble. it turned out that it wasn’t. i also had pressure in my vaginal area. i vomited twice once i got home. i finally got to sleep. when i woke up it was better. then it started hurting again. my mom took me to the ER thinking it was appendicitis. they ran tests an it wasn’t. now they’re thinking kidney stone or a UTI.

the pain is constant and sharp in my right side, where my appendix is located.
it burns when i pee, and if it doesn’t, then right after.
it also feels like i have to go, but when i do only a little comes out.
the doctor prescribed some pain meds [lortab] and some antibiotics, i don’t remember the name.

I went to the doctor on the 22nd of August and they found a 1.2 centimeter stone in my right kidney. They could not deal with it that day, but put a stint in my kidney to help with the pain. The next two days the pain got worst and the doctor’s office when calling thought I was having heart issues. I tried to tell them I have bad back pain in my kidney region and it was affecting my whole body. On Tuesday, the lady at the clinic said see your regular doctor, who pushed me off to emergency ward, which after 2 hours of pain and waiting, I left. Well, the pain got worst and the next day I went again. Finally, they gave me something for the pain and saw blood in my urine. I had been passing blood since my stint placement on Friday in my urine. They gave me some good pain meds and all day Thursday I was a veggie in bed. I did stop taking my pain pills at 12;30 am this morning because of a headache and the back pain was gone and still is gone. They did do a X-ray on that Wednesday and found two stones or the big one blew up into two now. I’m not sure. I don’t have blood in my urine any more, but I have bad head pains, nauseous, unable to eat, sweating all the time, and my eyes hurts, mainly my right side of my head. Any clue? Blood clot from the surgery on Friday for the stint? Brain Tumor? It’s all in my head? Or my heart, which I think that nurse was wrong?

Thank you for your time.

Question Details: I just left OB triage w/the diagnosis I was expecting, Gall Stones. I am in significant pain, but choosing not to have pain meds. I am not surprised since this has probably stemmed since pre conception. Also, I am not content w/missing work in the a.m. but of course I have not slept. What would you do? I do get paid if I cannot be there, but I am torn by my dedication and guilt?
Yes I realize I am awake and asking a question and while I thankyou for the sarcasm but I am wide awake at this point and quite certain pain meds are not the answer at this time and I do have a high pain threshold. Also, I am thoroughly aware that gall stones are common in pregnancy, I was looking to hear of others experiences.

I’ve been suffering with this stone sine 12/24/10. My general doctor sent me yesterday for a ultrasound and it showing the the stone was stuck right below my right kidney. The pain has gotten much worse today and now I’m running a fever of 100.8 and I throw up any and all the water I’ve been drinking. My general doctor tried all day to get me into someone who would take it out and no one returned her calls. I’m in severe pain and the pain meds she gave me don’t even work now. Should I just go to the ER tonight since now I’m running a temp and throwing up??
