okay this is going to be kinda long so please hang in there. in November i stopped taking my birth control about 2 moths after that i started cramping and bad lower back pain 3 weeks out of the month and i would be really sensitive to the point where my toddler couldnt sit on my lap. month after month this would happen i went in and my doc said i had BV she put me on meds and the pain came again i though okay the meds didnt help. one night i had horrible pain i almost went to the ER all i could do was lay on the couch so i made another appointment with my doc for the next day and she said my BV was gone so she said im going to get you an ultrasound and i bet you have ovarian cyst and it may have ruptured last night. My ultrasound was scheduled for a month after that doc appointment the pain came again i was thinking yes they will have to see something but nothing was found.. this month still have the pain but now my right kidney is hurting and thinking back they have hurt off and on but i just didnt think anything of it i remember being out with some friends having a couple drink and going pee and almost in tears in the bars bathroom because my kidneys hurt. today i noticed my finger nails and toe nails look a little funny, ridges going from base to top of nail. and on my toe nails my half moon almost covers my whole nail so i looked it up thinking i was lacking some vitamins come to find out they are both related to kidney disease/failure. i am about a half a pack a day smoker have a drink every once in awhile never had kidney stones im a 23 year old female i am going to make an appointment with my family doc today but would love to see what you all think thanks!
*im wondering if these thing could all be related to kidney problems i have thought i might have endo but have not gone back to my gyno. oh and another thing is in feb. i thought i was coming down with something bc i was tired all the time didnt want to move or talk tired it lasted for about a month straight not sure if thats something i should include!

My girl has a mild UTI and she’s going to the doctor tomorrow to get some antibiotics. We just aren’t sure if we have to stop having sex or what. Since it only effects the urethra I would think it’s OK to continue…but the meds have to be taken for like 3-5 days so it would really suck to stop for that long.
Yo…she says she feels up to it. And I’ll have to use a condom since she’s on BC.

Went to the ER 4 days ago with sudden onset of pain, turns out I had 1 kidney stone on the way out and 6 more in my kidney. I had an IV for fluids, nausea and pain and was sent home with meds for the same. I have been sore but getting better. Today, day 4 I am so nauseated its making me crazy, and that with Zofran (ms).
I know I am at fault, I didn’t make a follow up with my reg doc, 4 kids at home and not feeling good, it just wasn’t on my radar. I call the ER and asked if this was "normal" or if another one may have dislodged and if I should come back in. I was greeted with the ole cautious "we can’t say, we can’t tell you over the phone" arrggg,
Question to you all… do I ER or not ER? I have no fever, dull ache in the opposite side as last time and maximum nausea. I am an Army wife so cost isnt an issue however, as you can tell, I would hate to abuse the ER by "stopping in" because my tummy is upset…

Over the last 2 years I have been diagnosed four times with Kidney stones (Calcium). I’m a 42 year old male who is about 40 pounds overweight. I also have a condition called episodic ataxia and am currently taking the drug acetazolamide. I was hospitalized every time b/c I was unable to pass the stones on my own. Either they were too big or they were stuck.

This last trip to the ER my urine tested positive for renal insufficency. I need to get to the bottom of this. The medication I take for the ataxia has a side affect of kidney stones. According to my neurologist I need to go off the meds to stop the stones. According to my urologist, its not the cause of the stones.

Please offer any suggestions. thanks

Last October while I was at homecoming I complained about my back hurting the whole night. Then I got home and tried to sleep and the pain had moved to my side and it was pretty much unbearable. Like the worst pain I had ever felt in my whole life. Went to the hospital and the doctor said I had a kidney stone. Got my meds, passed it and all was fine until about a week ago, I woke up with the same unbearable pain in my side. Go to the hospital ANOTHER kidney stone but this time bigger. I dont understand what is causing it? I drink water and occasionally soda but I quit drinking diet soda after the first kidney stone. The nurse said my calcium level was normal so the only thing I can think of is it being hereditary but I dont know because no one on my moms side gets them and my dad is adopted. Is there anything else that causes kidney stones?? I’ve been drinking tons of water and cranberry juice lately. Is there anything else to help prevent them??

My dog got a UTI on a Saturday night. By Sunday we had to rush her to the emergency vet. It cost us so much we may lose our apartment because we can’t pay the rent and the vet bill. Is there a natural way to treat a dog UTI?
Yes, he did give us meds, but this is her 2nd UTI. We just learned that apparently she’s "prone".

Hi everyone-

I’m prescribed quite a large dose of methylphenidate (ritalin) daily: 54 mg of concerta (long-lasting ritalin), and two 20 mg instant release ritalin tablets. We’ve tweaked the dose for a while and this is something that really just makes me feel happy, productive, well-rested, personable, and motivated for once in my life. But it only works at a dose that high.

I WAS a vert severe cocaine addict and alcoholic, then I was prescribed these meds and I’ve been clean and sober ever since. My blood pressure and pulse are fine, I’ve been taking this dose for months. But I’m worried SOMETHING will happen to prevent me from being able to take it.

Does anyone know what this does to the kidneys? I’ve had some lower-left-side kidney pain lately and I’m just terrified something will disqualify me from taking these meds. I’ve had kidney stones in the past. Can someone PLEASE let me know if this will ruin my kidneys? Thanks SO MUCH for any help…

Please help…..

The day before my last period I had some serious pelvic pressure, along with the day I started my period. It seemed to get better after I started. 8 days later I wake in the middle of the night with pain. It feels as though #1 I am going to have chas or #2 I am having a baby and need to push. Neither of those happened, but it was severe and kept me awake. Then, the next am I still had it and was sweating and almost passing out because the pain was so severe. I took a pain pill (from a kidney stone I had months ago, and it didn’t feel anywhere close to a stone) and the pain went away for awhile and I no longer felt the pressure. It was gone for a few days then again last night. It hurt after I went to the bathroom (pee) worse. So I layed in bed all night. I do have Crohns disease (diagnosed with it but do not believe I have it. Not on meds and no symptoms after diagnosis 1 yr ago) and history of endometriosis. I have had surgery before on uterus and ovaries but I am dreading calling OB. The pain is very low and always in front. Any one have suggestions as to what it coud be?

For the past 4-5 months, I haven’t been feeling right. I have been tired constantly, to the point that I want to fall asleep at work. I need to drink 2-3 cups of caffeinated tea at work to have energy. I am super sensitive and crabby. I also have physical symptoms that are troublesome, I have lower back pain most days, where I went to the doctor to have it checked out, and all tests came back negative (no kidney stones, gallbladder, pancreatic problems, etc.). I get migraine headaches more than once a month. I have an acidic stomach and feel bile come up when I belch (I have been diagnosed with GERD 10 years ago and take daily meds, but for the past few months, i have been getting breakthrough acid).
I have been stressed out lately, with 3 job changes within this 4-5 month time period (my own doing, I wasn’t fired). I just cannot seem to find a job that I feel fits my life. Currently, I have been working in a call center for the past month and there is so much to learn, it’s so fast paced and INSANE! I am working mandatory overtime, 50 hours a week. And it’s 45 minutes away from home so I feel like I am compromising my family time with work. However, I am sick of looking for jobs, the position is with a well-respected company and don’t want to job hop anymore. I can’t win either way: I’m stuck in a job that doesn’t work for me yet what if I don’t like what else is out there (especially in this economy)? I’ve lost hope.
I have had problems with stress and anxiety in the past and currently take lexapro for that. Still, I am feeling these physical and emotional draining symptoms. I have no energy and feel sick. I really don’t know what to do. I don’t want to burn myself out……any advice for me with how to deal with the way I feel?

I have been experiencing pain in my left testicle, left groin area and left side of my back. I peed blood once. i did ultrasound and the doc found small crystals in my left kidney. i was treated with meds and it was gone for awhile.
Last week the pain comes back. I do masturbate a few times in a week. Is the pain due to kidney or masturbation.

I have an 11-year-old male beagle who is being treated for a urinary tract infection. The vet said his urinary test did not look like an infection and did an ultrasound for kidney stones and cancer, but found nothing other than an enlarged prostate. He put the dog on two antibiotics (one before the ultrasound and a second added afterward) and assumed that since he found nothing else, it must be an infection. He’s been on both medications for a week+.

Lately I haven’t seen any blood in his urine, a very good thing – but I could simply be missing it. He still groans when he pees and has to stop and start multiple times. It still comes in little spurts, which seems to put it at a weird angle because he’s been getting it all over his legs and belly.

He’ll finish both medications early next week, but doesn’t seem to be better. He’s shaky during the day and doesn’t play or chew his bones anymore. He’s still straining to pee and having pain. I know he’s not done with the meds, but I thought symptoms were supposed to improve about halfway through a course of antibiotics (at least in people, and why should dogs be different)? I’m concerned that he’ll finish the meds and still be sick. Look at my previous questions if you want a comprehensive list of his symptoms. I’m afraid this means it really isn’t an infection, and that’s why the vet didn’t see it in the test. What can this mean? What should I do to make him feel better, and what can I do to make him get well faster if this is an infection?
Hm, he is a bit chubby (not much, but a little). But would kidney problems cause painful urination and straining? I can see that it might produce the blood and stuff, but….

I’ll look up the symptoms and see if my dog exhibits any. Thanks so much for the heads up.

Couple of weeks ago, he prescribed me another 2 weeks worth of meds to try and make it easier for my kidney stones to exit the kidneys. I’m still cramping, though not as bad as I was at one point. I’m just really anxious about the whole thing. He said if these meds don’t work that he will want to put a stent in both ureters ( I think ) to help the larger stones pass.
What should I expect with that procedure? I’ve read a few things here and there online but I would prefer to hear from people who have gone through this.
He was also considering lithotripsy at one point too. Do they sedate you for either procedure? Hospital stay? Normally, I’m not so spastic about these things but the very thought of any type of surgery upsets me.

I am 30 years old and I have a broken tail bone from about 5 years ago that gives me varying degrees of hell from time to time, I have never sought medical help for it until now. The pain has been through the roof in my lower back down to the tail bone, I’d say 6.5-8.8 most days on a scale of 10. Let me put it this way, ladies it feels like being in perpetual labor when the contractions are 3-5 minutes apart. Men, imagine a kidney stone pain in the area I am talking about. I am taking motrin 2x daily, sometimes 3. Maybe a tylenol PM at nights when it’s keeping me up. I’m a tough gal, I had my firstborn in an ambulance with no meds, I’m an Army combat vet and I don’t whine a lot, but this HURTS. My doc won’t take my pain seriously because he says I’m "young" and I also suspect he thinks because I am female, I’m exaggerating or it’s some "period" related nonsense but my broken tailbone is in my records and they know this, but they give me nothing for the pain and I am in so much agony. I’ve been pretty much self-medicating with a few shots of vodka and I am NOT a big time liquor drinker, it just helps a bit. I use icy hot, hot/cold packs, do yoga, stretches but the pain is still there. What else can I do since the doctors won’t help me? Is there any nutritional supplement or vitamin anyone can recommend?

For about 2 years now I’ve been experiencing an occasional stabbing pain on the right side of my back around the bottom of my ribs.Thinking that it could be from a kidney stone, I had an ultrasound/sonogram done which came back negative. Blood-work, urinalysis etc.. came back negative. Weeks later, the pain got so bad it spread to the front and back to the doctor I went. Same tests were done, ultrasound/sonogram and bloodwork showed no change but this time they found traces of blood in my urine. Since there was no sign of a stone, the blood in my urine got me booked to see a urologist who told me it was nothing to concern myself about since cancer etc.. would cause noticeable bleeding, not just microscopic amounts. Some more weeks went by and then I found myself having severe pain in my lower abdomen, like being cut by a knife, along with major bleeding when I urinated, scaring the hell out of me, and back to the urologist I went. He ran a CT scan and discovered a 9mm stone in my right kidney, but since it wasn’t causing any blockage, the doctor wasn’t concerned. The bleeding stopped after a couple of days but the pain in my back continued. Every so often, I would continue to get severe pains in my lower abdomen and I began to bleed again, so back to the urologist I went. He ran another ultrasound/sonogram since he didn’t want to expose me to the radiation of another CT scan and told me that the kidney stone still wasn’t causing any blockage so I shouldn’t concern myself too much. My family doc believes that my abdominal pain and bleeding may be from a piece of the stone breaking off any passing and my back pain is just because the stone is so big, it’s causing my kidney to hurt. On the other hand, my urologist is telling me that a stone inside the kidney doesn’t cause pain as long as there’s no blockage and has been trying to get me to pass the stone with lots of water and some meds that he’s prescribed. He won’t perform a lithritopsy unless the stone is blocked somewhere but at this point, since it’s still inside the kidney, there’s nothing that he feels that we should do. I’ve been noticing some white flakes/specs in my urine on some occasions. Since I’ve been tested for infections and they’ve come back negative, could the specs/flakes be fragments of the stone? If it is the stone, what would be causing it to fragment (so that I can continue to help it along)? Between the family doc and the urologist, who is right (since they both seem to be giving me different/opposite opinions)?

One of my aunts has been ill and losing weight for like 4 months. I don’t know how much because I havn’t seen her, but there was speculation within the family that she was on cocaine. She was pretty fat before and apparently she’s extremely skinny. There was an um…falling out between her and most of the family because she basically abandoned my cousin, and took things of my grandma’s after she died last year that were supposed to go to my mother and I, but obviously I didn’t want THIS to happen, and my mom is still very close to her. It’s hard to get straight information, because she, and her whole family lie a lot. My uncle M(my aunt and mother’s brother) and other aunt K (their sister) called my mom asking if she knew that L had cancer. She freaked and called L. Apparently nobody knew until my cousin snooped through aunt L’s room and found the meds. She’s on radiation pills and I believe antibiotics, and other things. When my mom talked to L, she said that they were finding "cells" but no mass so they thought there was only a chance it could be cancer, but it was probably just stones. She said she was going back for a checkup in a couple weeks and hadn’t even missed a day of work. Now this doesn’t seem right. I highly doubt they would give radiation pills to someone without knowing if they had cancer, and as far as I know, no amount of kidney or bladder stones are going to be putting off cancer cells. But yet wouldn’t she be hospitalized? She could have been without us knowing I suppose. She’s also been a very heavy alcoholic for a very long time, but I don’t know if she still is. I’ve only seen her once in the last year, for like 5 minutes, but she seemed to have had a bit to drink. My best guess is that she has Carcinoma In Situ, which would really suck, or that she’s really just taking the radiation for overactive thyroid and using this to prevent the other kids from kicking her out of my grandma’s house, which they all own and she is living in rent-free. Like I said, my extended family is pretty screwed up, but I would still never want this to happen. Does anyone have a good idea of what’s going on?
PS-I used initials only because I don’t want people recognizing me from real life

i got hired delivering pizza a few weeks ago. i had only worked there part time for about 2 weeks, so about 40 hours total. the pay was all cash at the end of the night and we were supposed to be in charge of our own taxes etc… but then i got a kidney stone and had serious pain. they prescribed me vicadin for the pain, which obviously meant i couldnt drive, making me unable to work. i offered to still come in to work in the lobby but i couldnt drive due to the meds i was on. they told me just to focus on getting better and then come back to work. this morning i called to tell them that my kidney stone had dropped and i was no longer taking the meds, so i would be able to come in to work tonight. the owner on the phone told me that i was no longer on the schedule, he had hired a new guy and i was replaced. that sounds very unlawful to me, i know that i cannot be fired for passing a kidney stone. i also know that i was only working there for 2 weeks, so i dont know if theres anything i will be able to do about it.

please help me, is there anything i can do about this? can i collect unemployment? probably not… but if anyone knows who to call to at least get the company in trouble… (get back games) please let me know, or if theres anything i can do to help myself let me know. thanks! also, im in wisconsin so im not sure if that matters.

We have tried several methods but, not really passed enough of a stone to say any has worked for sure.

I went to the ER Sunday before last because I was in excruciating pain (so bad I was throwing up from the pain) They diagnosed me w/ a 3mm kidney stone that was blocking my ureter. Gave me some meds and told me to see my urologist.
He is busy and don’t have an appointment for awhile, but I was curious if it is normal after urinating to wipe blood.. not a lot or anything, but does this mean the stone is about to pass?

I have had lithotripsy years ago, but those pieces I passed were all broken up and I could feel them pass. I’m not even sure how big 3mm is (yeah that doesn’t sound too smart, but I don’t do metric)

Thanks in Advance!!

Cinn =)
haha! Thanks ER and yes easy for you to say. It was blocking the ureter and I know the tube it has to travel down is only the size of a pencil lead. Is that 3mm? It’s been awhile now and thought it would have passed grrr. Thumbs up to you!
(((Bill))) thanks for the 3mm size and always a pleasure to see you as well.
Rscott.. yes my 2nd child was natural child birth, not by choice but they induced labor and told me too late for an epidural and I said nooo it’s not, but they didnt listen.
I was in a crap load of pain last sunday from the stone blocking the ureter. I mean doubled over and throwing up.
I hope this thing comes out soon.
Thanks Cash… I’ll get some kidney beans. I read a natural remedy of 1/3 cup olive oil and 1/3 cup lemon juice mixed together. I did it twice last week and again this morning.
Thanks and thumbs up to all that answered.
I feel sick to my tummy!

My husband’s urine has a reddish-brown hue to it the last 4 times he has urinated, which we know may mean there is blood in his urine (he is not on any meds or has eaten anything unusal to change his urine color). He also had bad abdominal cramps earlier that have since subsided. We thought the cramps were from constipation but cannot be sure. Also, he had earlier light-headedness and has lower back pain (which is not unusal for him…he has back trouble often).

These symptoms point to a possible kidney infection or stones, but he does not have a fever and is feeling better tonight than he did earlier today. He is not the type to complain about ailments, so this is all unusal.

Are there any people in the medical profession who can give us advice on whether we should go to the ER or if this can wait to see his regular doctor tomorrow?
He is 33 years old. He’s drinking lots of water and he says the urine was clearer with his last elimination.
He saw his Primary Care Physician (Family Practitioner) who confirmed that he most likely has kidney stones and told him that he just has to let them pass. They wrote him a scrip for Vicodin and that was it. I know if they get really bad they can break them up using sound waves or something, but the doctor didn’t give him any more instructions. Are there any homeopathic remedies out there?

Hello. I am a 35 yr old female, have had 2 children (c-section) and a hysterectomy. I am a bit overweight, approx. 40 pounds. I have been diagnosed in the past with stomach ulcers. Most recently (January) I had severe right side (2-3" below the ribs), I went to the Dr. assuming I had an appendicitis, well it seems I didn’t. He ran tests and did an ultra sound, my stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, kidney and appendix were all fine, however he did say that I showed signs of moderate fatty liver disease. Recently, (last week) I started having the same pain in my side, it was severe last weekend and hurt worse with movement. I took it easy, what what I ate (when I did) and it has gradually gotton better, (is still a dull, constant, aching pain), however in addition to it now I have SEVERE heartburn after I eat/drink anything. I have a horrible taste in my mouth, my stomache, chest and throat burns, I still have the pain in my side as well. Antacids don’t help, bland diet didn’t help, water didn’t, Aciflex meds didn’t help. I am in pain and am not sure what else this could be. I know I should see a gastroenterologist, but I am not eligible for insurance for another month. I know there are such things as gall stones, acid reflux, GERD, ulcers, etc. But does anyone have any educated idea as to what this is and should I be extremely concerned or should I hold out a few more weeks until the insurance kicks in and I can see a professional. My quack of a Dr. doesn’t seem to help me much, anyone out there with the same symptoms and a diagnosis, and Dr’s out there with suggestions. Thanks for any help!!!
