kidney stone that recently passed but the dr said he also had a non obstructive stone in upper pole of the left kidney and also limited bowel loops without oral contrast but no bowel obstruction noted. He has had numerous mri’s cat scams and sonos (to which always say he has a unremarkablecontour urinary bladder. Still, he always wakes each morning to excrutiating pain to his left pain. He feels better after pain med and urinating. He is also on Disability for unexplained pain that they finally categorized as severe ibs and abnormal tight lower sphincter causing constipation. We are at our witts end but feel very sure that his pain is coming from something with the left (due to the filing of the left kidney)-he even gets rib pain on side when pain is real bad and he cant move bowels due to straining pain on ribs. He had a ambiguous procedure about 18 yrs ago when he was young due to them thinking he had kidney stones-and he didnt (though this time where sure he had stones he even urinated one out. The operation he had before was said to be that -he was born with excessive vessels and they had to get rid of some of them, i think because the was causing the side bloated and pain. He was cured from that. This pain feels sometimes like the same but seems to always be dismissed due to the mri, ct…….results. Please help as the rt surgery was misdiagnosed to until they opened him up (them days was no lalascopic). He suffers everytine he seems to drink to much water or filled intravenously from too much water on left. Thanks so much- What are the options we should suggest or u would suggest? please feel free to list all ideas that seems feasible? Thx so much

I gone to the kidney surgeon three times since my last surgery nad he says im SOOOOO healthy aside from one kidney stone which he predicts aint going anywhere. In the left kidney. I had 12 stones in the past year, almost died from that with a combo of Hydronephrosis. Had surgery and was back to normal. I kept going to the kidney dr and all he says that I got one tiny sized stone thats not going anywhere and my levels he says is perfect. BUT IT HURTS!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE KIDNEYS What do I do?

But my doctor says that its not the stones that are causing my pain cause every time I have to go to the hospital for the severe pain they do CT’s they never find anything. What else could it be?
I cant pass the stones, every time one gets stuck they have to go in and take it out.But why when I’m in this much pain I go to the hospital and they never find anything. So they always say its not a stone.Even when I’m peeing blood.
I have 5 stones in my left kidney and 4 in my right kidney, but its my left one that I’m having all the problems.

I have a friend that has been experiencing pain in her back as well as pain on urination and blood in her urine. She just had a kub ultrasound done yesterday. The Doctor said there was nothing of concern showing up in her kidneys other than 1 small kidney stone. The doctor told my friend that the stone could easily be gotten rid of by taking antibiotics (which she has already done twice prior to the ultrasound with no improvement). Could it be that she was not given the proper antibiotic for removing kidney stones but one for UTI instead (which was the preliminary diagnosis)? I myself have a very large kidney stone in my left kidney which my urologist has been monitoring for the past 4 years with an annualy Xray. It has never given me the least bit of trouble and I have never seen blood in my urine. If it’s true that kidney stones can be gotten rid of with antibiotics why wouldn’t my urologist have already prescribedthem for my stone? He said the only solution is to do one of 2 procedures, one which involves going up through the urethra and into the kidney breaking up the stone into small pieces that would still have to be passed with urination …VERY painful! The other choice would be something called lithotripsy which is a laser type method used to break the stone up also and the small pieces would still have to be passed through urination ….. again VERY PAINFUL!
My question is NOT how to avoid getting kidney stones but whether antibiotics can get rid of them.

Long story short i had a kidney infection in my right kidney and was put on antibiotics. The kidney pain came back so i got switched to a stronger antibiotic. It cleared everything up and my urine was even clear. I didnt miss a dose but after six days of feeling fine the pain returned in my left kidney. I feel fine otherwise but before pain was the initial symptom and then i got a fever. I got checked for kidney stones last week and i dont have any. What could this be? Is it the infection again?

I am a 29 year old male who has a muscular athletic build. I lift weights and exercise on a pretty regular basis. The past 4 days I have been under an extreme amount of stress. Ive had chest pains and my left kidney felt to have pressure on it. I also noticed that my urination was over %50 reduced and darker. I started freaking out majorly and my fiance(and I) decided it was best I go to the ER. I went to the ER and my blood pressure was elevated along with my pulse over 120bpm. I was seriously freaking out and could not calm down. I had a few panic attacks the days prior and nothing I did could calm myself down. I was convinced I was dieing.

They took a urine sample from me that was not much and slightly dark, not bloody just darker than normal. They also took 2 things of blood and ran tests on it. They pretty much told me up front that they thought I was dehydrated and seriously stressed out way to much but I was not convinced of that and I had to know that something was wrong with me. I was having chest pains the past few days, high heart rate, short of breath, along with not going to the bathroom much at all…..scary.

Furthermore the Dr. ordered a CT scan to be performed to look over my kidneys for stones, tumors.

Well after everything she came back in and told me that the CT scan showed no stones, tumors and they were regular size. They could find nothing wrong at all. Also my blood results came back normal and urine came back. The only thing she told me is that my creatinine level was a little higher than it should be. It was at a 1.4. She told me it was only .1 above a normal level and that it could be caused because she felt I was very dehyrated. I also read that muscular younger people will have slightly higher than normal levels of creatinine because it has to do with muscle repair. Regardless she told me to see a dr just to make sure there is not a problem that may be starting.

I felt really good after this and immediatly I felt 10x better than I was. I am still slightly concerned something is wrong. I have felt a few chest pains still and after I got home yesterday I drunk a TON of water. I am talking probably much more than I should. I had to go to the bathroom normally after 4-5 days around 4 times and it was a lot each time and looked normal. I woke up this morning and my lower back region felt kinda achy, sore….not really sure how to explain it. I am also still having some pressure on my left side. Could all this be still caused by stress?

I am going to the dr. soon as I get an appointment to go see him. Should I be really concerned?

I was born with douplicated ureters on my left kidney. I’ve had countless stones including three 8mm stones and three 4mm stones another time. I have had 3 lithotripsies and 5 stents. I now have 1 4mm stone just hanging out in my kidney. I’m in constant pain but drs keep saying its not my kidney that hurts bc none are blocking. Now I have to go to pain management. Does anyone have any advice or similar situations?
My stones are rare and are usually found in women and are usually extremely large. They are carbonate apatitie. Its a rare stone that is hard on the outside and has bacteria on the inside. Once I get the results of my 24 hour urine test I will find out why my body does this. I drink nothing but water now, however my urologist has no advice for me until after the 24 hour urine test.
Also I have had too many CT scans and can not have anymore. I have had 3 urologists in 11 years. That’s how long this has been going on.

42/female/5 ft tall & 130 lbs
For the last two months I have had a pain in my lower left pelvic/groin area (almost where upper leg and body meet on left side) and sometimes radiating up hip and into left flank. It almost *always* hurts when I am sitting, and is better or gone when standing or lying down. Not bad enough for pain meds, but it hurts. Pain just started one day – hasn’t gotten any worse, but still there.

In the last two months I’ve had:

UTI test from PCP – positive, so given antibiotics.
Annual blood work-up – normal.
UTI test 10 days later-negative, but hurting. Sent for abdominal/pelvic CT scan with oral contrast.
CT scan showed 2mm and 1 1/2mm stone in left kidney.
Referred to Urologist – UTI test positive again, so 10 days antibiotics & a strainer.
2nd urologist appt – still positive. More antibiotics.
3rd urologist appt – No uti. Scope of bladder – normal, but he didn’t do another xray.

OB/GYN – pelvic and pap – results normal. OB said "Classic kidney stone pain. Kidney stones are horrible". He mashed around on my ovary – no pain or sensitivity and he said didn’t see a need for ultrasound to check for cyst since I just had a ct scan.

So… I was supposed to have another urologist appt tomorrow, but they rescheduled it for end of month. I think I’m just getting depressed, and haven’t passed either stone as far as I know. :(

If you have had kidney stones, does this sound like normal pain? Are there any other tests I should have at this point? A different doctor? I’m not sure, and I just feel helpless and a little hopeless at this point. Thanks for any help or direction.

around 2-3 weeks ago i started feeling some pain where my left kidney is located, didn’t think much about it then, thought it could be a strained muscle or something like that, so i ignored it.

About a week ago the pain got worse, and now its constantly hurting, i really dont know how to explain it more detailed, i have never had a kidney stone before.

I looked around a bit and read that drinking water and tranberry juice could get rid of the infection and/or help getting out the kidney stone, but since its already been going on for weeks, should i go and see a doctor now or try drinking lots of tranberry juice and water for a couple of days?

I am a 31 year old woman, and this is my 3rd visit from the kidney stone fairy in less than 5 years. The last 2 times, my kidneys were peppered with little tiny flecks of "stones", so I am familiar with a little kidney pain, but never knew if/when I was passing them because they were so tiny.

This time, I have 5 stones in my left kidney and 2 in my right. They are all small enough to pass, but are still on the large side of passable. A week after they first showed up, they were still sitting at the top of my kidneys, and hadn’t even begun to move.

I am taking pain pills everyday because I cannot function otherwise. I can definitely tell when these are moving because the pain brings me to my knees, but how will I know if I’ve passed them or if they are still hanging out in my kidney somewhere?

At this point, it’s been almost 3 weeks….shouldn’t I be done with this by now?

I am a 23 year old female with 2 kids I went to the hospital early friday morning after being woke up at 1 20 am with crazy pain in my side back and tummy. I knew it was my kidneys cause I had a problem with them when I was pregnant with my daughter, however when I was preg with my daughter they could not do anything about them cause I was preg and after I delivered I had no issues so all was forgotten well after my daughter I have had one more child since and no issues untill now. I went to the ER and they did a CT scan and found 3 small and 1 12mm stone in my left kidney and a small stone in my right. However the large stone in my left kidney was stuck at the bottom of my kidney and causing damage to my kidney as I could not pass urine. They did the laser stone removal an placed a stent in that surgery was finished at midnight friday leading into sat, they sent me home saterday afternoon, and told me the blood in my urine would be less and less over the next day and would start to be orange coloured instead of bright red well it is not bright red anymore it is dark red and they did not send me home with any pain killers and asprin or anything else are just taking the edge off. I have to go see the Urologist on wen afternoon but I am not sure if I should go to a clinic or try to get into my doc tomorrow or even go back to the hospital before that, it just still seems like alot of blood. anyone have any advice or had this themselves????

My mom has been sick for about a week now with terrible pain located around the left kidney. She recently has come up with some other symptoms like nausea, high fevers, chills, stomach bloating (huge amount of bloating), almost complete lose of appetite and thirst, reddening of the skin around where the pain is, and lack of sleep. She had an appointment scheduled three days from now, but me might end up running her into the emergency room. I thought she might have a kidney stone, but then she started getting the bloating and the redness. I’m really worried. What would cause her to actually redden on the skin around the area of the pain? I’m worried she might have an infection. What do you guys think? I would like to get an idea of what might be wrong with her.
**by the way, the redness is not a rash, it kinda looks like a bruise…

ok so a little background info before everyone gets on here and tells me how im so horrible for having government assistance and its not the taxpayers responsibility to take care of me and blah blah blah.
so when my husband and i were trying to get pregnant i had a wonderful job at an engineering firm with benefits; vacation, 401k, health, dental, and vision. my husband also had a GREAT paying job as a concrete finisher (benefits of his were dropped when the economy started going down..he worked for a VERY small company) but that was ok because mine were so great. so when i got pregnant, everything was great. at 11 weeks, i started developing chronic kidney stones (about 1 or 2 a month lasting anywhere from 4 days to 3 weeks) rendering me unable to work (which i lost benefits and couldnt afford cobra) a few weeks later, my parents asked us to move in with them rent, bill, and grocery free so my husband could quit his job to stay home and take care of me. i have been working since i was 14, so i did not feel so guilty applying for medicaid (i did not have any other options anyways). so that is why i am on government assistance.
so i had my baby a month ago and have undergone 3 operations and now my left kidney has stopped functioning once again because of a large kidney stone. my doctor ordered a lithotripsy asap so i wouldnt lose permanent function in my kidney. so i go to schedule the surgery and they tell me that it will be at least 48 hours until the surgery can happen and thats if they can find an anasteiologist that accepts my insurance that quickly (it could take as long as 3 weeks..by then i will have permanent damage). my questions are 1) do they treat everyone on government assistance like they are less than human and do not deserve care? and 2) is there anything i can do to speed this up?
***i post every question on Newborn and baby because i like getting responses from other moms. also please no one tell me that i am less than human because of my situation. i would rather no one try to hurt my feelings over this. thanks in advance.
*i applied for medicaid when i was about 8 months along..when mine ran out.

Okay so i just got back from the doctor today. I got some kind of scan about 2-3 weeks ago to look at my kidneys. They found a 6 mm kidney stone in my left kidney and i’ve been having on and off pains in my left side for a few days now but nothing severe. I’m also drinking lots of water.. but i’m just wondering how much it’s gonna hurt because i’m pretty scared from what i’ve been reading about the pain. Also how long do kidney stones usually take to pass?

btw im a guy

Yesterday, the weather was pretty hot and I didn’t drink enough water or any liquid for that matter as much as I should have. Today, I had my typical morning coffee, and after I had my lunch with a cup of water, my left kidney started hurting really bad. Sharp pain and when I went to go urinate, eveytime I "pushed" to pee, it would hurt. Since then, I’ve been drinking water non stop with some cranberry juice, the pain has gone down, no more sharp pain, but there is a throbbing pain that I cannot ignore, the only part that I’m in pain is from that abdominal pain where my left kidney’s at. Is this for sure kidney stones or what do you think? Are kidney stones so common that they can just "wither" away without any medication or surgery? I’d appreciate any info or insight. Peace.

I have a large stone in my left kidney. I’m looking for some advice. I’m in the UK. I have an appointment with the kidney doc friday the 19th. It’s too big to zap to pieces or pass. I heard about a Brazilian herb called Quebra Pedra that supposedly breaks the stone up. It literally translates into English as "it breaks stone". Has anybody ever heard about it or used it? I ordered some but they haven’t gotten here yet. Please help me with suggestions.
I’ve had some good answers so far and I thank all of you. A couple of you said you never heard of a stone to big for Lithotripsy. Well, you have now. They won’t like to zap them if they are bigger than 1.5cm (15mm). Mine was 2.8cm about eight months ago. I’m guessing it’s probably close to 4cm by now. I’m in pain almost every day. I’ll be d amn glad to get rid of this thing.

In april I was diagnosed with kidney stones. I had left side pain on and off for a year. In that month it got worse and I had to go to the ER. I had to go through lithotripsy to get it to pass. A few weeks later I was put back into the hospital after having a fever for a week and actually in the hospital it reached 103. They said it was a infection from the stent. Since the surgery my left kidney has been pain free. Now my right side has been having the same problem, just not as bad to where I have to go to the ER. I got xrays and an IVP done recently and they told me I had small stones but they are not big enough to be causing pain. They said it is probably my actual back from lifting at work. I know its not from work bcuz I hadn’t worked in 3 days and I woke up that morning of my appt. and the pain was there. Plus it doesn’t feel like a muscle it feels internal. My question is, if its not my right kidney, what other internal organs would cause right side back pain?

So, my mom has a kidney stone in her left kidney. 3 weeks ago she went to the ER because she was in horrible severe pain. They did urine and blood tests and it turned out she had the kidney stone. The Doctor did a CT scan and told us the stone was in the ureter (not sure what size the stone is). She went to a urologist and was scheduled to get surgery 2 weeks later (which was last week). Well none of that happened because we found out she was pregnant. They just told her to drink a lot of water and take tylenol for pain. Well a couple days later, Wednesday or Thursday of last week she said she got sharp pain on her back then all of a sudden it stopped and she felt relief. We thought maybe she had passed the stone from the ureter to the bladder. Everything was good until last night (Saturday) when she started getting the pain again. We went to the ER and they just gave her vicodin for pain. They didn’t do a CT scan because of the baby. So do you think she might have the stone in her bladder or could it still be stuck in the ureter? We’re calling the urologist again Monday to see if theres something she can do to pass that stone. Also if the pain is caused by obstruction wouldn’t drinking more water make the pain worse? Wouldn’t more liquid make the ureter stretch more which would be more pain? Thanks by the way!

Hi friends ,a day ago i got a stone removed from my urinary bladder. I was suffering with the stone for more than a year, but i feel great relief now after the surgery. Now after surgery doctors say I have two small stones in my left kidney ,which can give rise to the same stone which was removed now. I want to get rid of these two small stones growing further. Please tell me how to avoid stone formation. Any diet changes or exercises , yoga, etc..anything that would give me permanent relief from these stone formations. Doctor gave me some medicines for the present kidney stones, but i want some other non medicinal ways to cure it. Please help me. Thank u

Could you please explain to me the following result:

"I’ll defined hyperechogenicities seen in mid cortex of the right kidney. The left kidney shows homogenous parenchymal echopattern. The corticome dullary junction is fairly defined. The cortical border is smooth. The pelvocalyces are not dilated. There are hyperechoic foci seen in the mid calyx of the right kidney and inferior calyx of the left kidney measuring 0.36 cm and 0.57 cm in size. No evidence of solid mass or hydronephrosis."

I have also done x-ray KUB, but it found nothing. Is the location of my stones should have been visible on x-ray assuming the stones are not radiolucent?

Where and what is mid cortex?

What is mid calyx and inferior calyx? Are the stones of my size there have at least 50% chance if getting out by themselves?

Any idea upon what exactly my disease is?
I mean, I have been detected with two stones. What I want to know in what parts of the kidney they are. Because there is a correlation not only between the size of the stones and the chance of it’s spontaneous exit, but also by their location.

Are my stones located in upper, middle or lower part of the kidney?
