My mom has gall stones, and her dr. says she needs to have her gall bladder removed. She would like to hear some other people’s experiences with gall stones. Have you ever had them? Did you have to have your gall bladder removed? If so, what was the recovery like, and how large/how many were your scars? How long was it before you were back at work after the surgery?

Thanks for any answers!

About three years ago I got extremely sick out of no where. It felt like I was being stabbed directly in my stomach (not my gut), I was vomiting constantly for almost a week. I was hospitalized due to dehydration, and was given iv fluids. I couldn’t eat and was in the hospital for over a week. Along with this physical sickness it felt as if I was literally losing control of my mind. It is the worst thing i’ve ever experienced and I’ve had an extremely hard time explaining this to people. It felt physically like I was going to explode, and as if there was pressure on my skull. It seemed as if everything was spinning out of control every second of everyday, I was confused, couldn’t talk or organize my thoughts. I never thought it was possible for a human being to feel this kind of pain, both physically and mentally. These past three years have been the scariest years of my life, there were days that i just didn’t think I could make it another second. I was actually admitted to a psych ward, after the doctors here in southern ohio told me I had an anxiety disorder. While there it was discovered that I had a very large kidney stone, but it was removed and these symptoms still persisted. To be honest I listened to the advice of my doctors and took the psychiatric approach to feeling better. I was seeing a psychiatrist three times a week, and was on every single mental medication there is from lithium to respirodol to anti-anxiety medicine and so on. I was basically a zombie for two years. However, even my psychiatrist didn’t believe that what was happening to me was mental. To help you understand better, I will tell you that in the day before I got sick, the only thing that I had done differently was start to take a total body cleanser from GNC along with a multi vitamin. I’ve had anxiety in the past, and this wasn’t anxiety. It was as if I was being poisoned, and my mind and body were rejecting it. Also, while in the hospital they took out my gall bladder citing that I had bilary diskonesia. It seems that everyday is still a task for me both physically and mentally. I feel as if it is harder for me to pay attention, learn, keep my cool, and not be sick now, and my body constantly aches. I still have these horrible hunger pain type feelings in my stomach, and when they get bad I feel as if I am going to pass out and I start shaking all over. I’ve had bouts where my blood pressure has fallen during these times….however there have been times where my blood pressure has been extremely high. I was on medicine for a while due to my heart racing. When this all first started I lost 30 lbs, although after all of the psych medicine i’ve been on i’ve gained that back and more. I know that this is alot to take in and I want to stress that this came completely out of no where. One day I was fine the next day I was like this. I need an answer because all though i’ve started to learn how to live around this, it still is by no means living and is hard everyday. I’m scared, and I need some answers. (I’ve seen several doctors, one even diagnosed me initially with MS but later said nothing showed on my MRI) Thanks for reading, and thanks ahead of time for any help you can give me.

Had a bunch of tests. everything was fine. Ultrasound technician said I had a tiny kidney stone but that it was nothing to worry about. Had everything checked–everything. Been going on for 6 months on and off. Nausea starts around 3 or 4pm until around bedtime. (11:00) Nothing else is wrong. ONLY nausea. Not sure where to go from here. Had an endoscopy this past summer, gall bladder check, stool check, all of it. Why am I sick everyday after 3pm?
Not pregnant either–gyno checked.

gallstones run in my family and more than half of my family has had their gall bladder removed due to complications. I just want to be proactive instead of having to deal with severe pain and have it removed later in life.

I started getting these gall stone attacks 2 weeks after I had my daughter in January and have had them regularly ever since. I have been reading it usually happens in overweight people or older people. My doctor didn’t think it would be this so he put it down to acid reflux but I had a ultrasound last week that confirmed its a gallstone now I have to have my gall bladder removed.

I am at a very normal weight for my heigh and eat a fairly low fat diet apart from the occasional treat

How did i get this as it cant be down to bad diet?

Thanks

Two weeks ago i was in the er with bladder pressure and they Dr did a urine test and it came out negative for a uti so he said my bladder was irritated and sent me home with peridium to numb it. As soon as the peridium was gone the symptoms returned but this time with burning.I went to my ob-gyn and she did another urine test and this time found Large traces of blood in my urine but the urine test came back negative for a UTI as well.

She Put my on Cypro (Antibiotic) for 2 times a day 500 Mg. and said she would grow a culture to see if it is for sure a UTI but she said she is pretty sure it is. Once i started the cypro the next day i started to get Nausea after eating, in the morning when i wake up and before i go to bed at night and have had pain in my left upper quadrant right by my ribs that shoot into the middle of my back and also very loose stools.

I had gotten worried so looked up side effects from the pills and they are all the same as what i am experiencing but my fear is that it still could be some thing else causing these problems and with out my Urine culture results, It can be hard to determine. I know if the results come back that it is a uti then it is probably side affects from the pills but if negative then the blood in the urine is caused by another problem and that’s probably why i am sick.

Any idea? I have been so worried over this and i am even losing weight because when i do eat it is not much and i am afraid to eat.

Additional Details

I forgot to mention and this is important.

The er doctors did an ekg or my pelvis and up to my chest and found nothing in the test and they did a lipid panel and a Cbc and there was nothing wrong with my kidneys and theres no kidney stones or cysts or any thing like that. They wanted to admit me but i refused to stay because i had not one to watch my children. They wanted to order and an ultrasound first thing in the morning to look at my gall bladder. I am going to follow up with my ob to see if she can do an ultrasound of it for me since she is the one who diagnosed me with the blood in my urine.

Also just thought of this…. I had a c-section 3 months ago with my 2nd child. Don’t know if that matters? Probably not but just incase I thought i should add that!

My boyfriend has been in and out of the ER all weekend with severe stomach pain. At first they thought it was kidney stones, then gall stones, now they believe he has a disease. I don’t know the scientific name (it ends in calculus) but more or less his gall bladder has a malformed artery so his gall bladder does not contract correctly. This is causing him to not be able to digest fats in the correct way. He is getting a test done on Monday where they inject him with a radio active dye and force his gall bladder to contract to see if it causes pain. This will show whether it is definitely his gall bladder and if he needs a liver transplant. The surgeon is pretty sure that he will need his gall bladder removed later this week. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or can tell us what to expect. Not really the surgery (I leave that to the doctors) but recovery time, pain levels, etc. The doctors said that its a pretty simple surgery and he would only be out of work for 2 weeks, but I’m worried about him and I know he’s scared and we’d feel a lot better if we heard it from someone who experienced it. Thank you!

my niece is about to have gall bladder removed due to gall stones. I have read some blogs indicating that the docs say all will be well and then patient discovers the gall bladder is no longer there to do its job (whatever that is) there is still pain and now chronic diarrhea. I’d appreciate any insight.

I had my gall bladder taken out because of gall stones. The doctors do the surgery then go golfing. To them its no big deal. What shall I expect down the road? Thanks for any diet advise. I do feel great now with no more cramps and issues.

Okay I had my gall bladder out a few months ago…and now I have this slight pain in my mid back on the right side. It hurts fairly bad…but only when I move. Just in case I have started drinking a TON of water…..If it was a kidney stone would it be a medium type pain or an "oh my God" pain like a gall bladder attack?

I downloaded a recipe from the internet contains olive oil, apple juice and Epsom salt
this recipe is a traditional treatment instead of surgery to get rid of gall bladder stones.
the problem is that the stone in my gall bladder was seen when the doctor scanned it with ultra sound scan. which means it’s big (it looked very small in the picture but as it appeared so it’s big)
well I’m scared if I use this treatment the stone will be stick some where in my body and won’t get out, or it’ll be painful.
can anyone help me?

I need to have my gall bladder removed because of gall stones. What are the long term effects of having no gall bladder? Does it impact your liver? I’ve heard of gall bladder flushes to remove stones. Do these really work? Is it painful?

I have had 2 CT scans, a gall bladder ultrasound and finally a HIDA scan. The first 3 scans/ultrasound looked completely normal (no gall stones). The HIDA scan showed that my gall bladder is functioning at 14%. My pain has gradually gone away. I wonder why I wouldn’t still be hurting if it is not functioning. What would happen to cause your gall bladder to stop functioning all of a sudden?
I am 20 years old and weigh 120 pounds. Age and obesity aren’t causes, what is?

I went into my doctors appointment today so excited to be five weeks pregnant, but the mysterious and terrible pain I have been experiencing under my right ribs turns out to be gall stones! My doctor wants to take my gall bladder out in a few weeks while it is safe for the baby. Anyway, my question is more about what diet I am supposed to be following! I was told to eat bland foods – the blander the better, and little to no fat. Has anyone else been through this, and what type of foods were you able to eat that didn’t cause an attack and didn’t cause you to have morning sickness either. Any advice or simply words of encouragement would be helpful right now! My husband just left for five weeks of training with the US Army Reserves, so I am in need of some kind words. Thanks again!
