About a month ago I was having sharp pains in my kidneys, the right one mostly, and frequent urination. I went to the doctor and they said I had a uti and gave me bactrim and it cleared up. As soon as I was done with the antibiotics the symptoms came back. I lived with it for another week or so, then the kidney pain became severe. I went to the er where they perfomed blood and urine tests, a doctor examined me and they also gave me a CT scan and could find nothing wrong. They said I had no stones or infection, offered me painkillers, which I declined, and sent me home. I have been to two doctors, urgent care, and the ER and I am really at a loss of where to turn next. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? The symptoms are not as severe as they once were, but still are there, also I have been feeling a great amount of fatigue. I am on 3 medications… Zoloft, klonopin (only as needed I rarely take it) those are for anxiety. And I was on Adipex, but stopped taking it two days ago because it seems that all of this started a few weeks after I began taking it and I don’t like how it makes me feel. Are any of these meds related to kidney problems that anyone knows of? All of the doctors I saw were aware of the meds I am on and didn’t say anything, but I am running out of places to turn. Help Please!!!

I woke up yesterday morning with severe pain in my back, right below the ribcage. It hurt to inhale deeply, cough, laugh, twist my torso, and even just standing or sitting. I may have possibly had a UTI the day before, but I didn’t think there was any correlation. It was pretty bad, and I was freaked out, so I went to the ER. They gave me a CT scan, urine test, and some major painkillers.

When I got the CT results, the doctors said that even though they couldn’t see a kidney stone, that’s what they believed it to be. (They said the symptoms added up: "wrap-around" pain in the kidney area, good response to painkillers, blood cells in urine) So with a nice prescription for heavy strength Ibuprofen, I went home. Minimal pain for the rest of the night.

THIS morning, I woke up with very little pain on my right side (the original side), but lots of pain on my left. It was as if my kidney stone switched places! Could it be possible to have two kidney stones, one right after the other?

I’m also skeptical about the CT scan. Wouldn’t a stone have showed up on it? Could I have an infection? I don’t have a fever or any other symptoms besides those listed above.

I went and saw my doctor earlier in the year for a mild lower back pain that I originally thought could be a kidney stone; after seeing a urologist, kidney stones were ruled out, but an enlarged lymph node was noticed when a CT scan was taken; I was referred to an oncologist who didn’t believe the lymph node to be lymphoma related as I didn’t have elevated white blood count, no other affected lymph nodes, no night sweats, weight loss, fevers or any other symptoms; I’m also a very very athletic guy and I’ve never felt better in my life except for this nagging pressure in my lower back. The pressure is also intermitttent; one week I may feel it, then I might go a couple weeks without feeling anything, then it comes back. My family doctor thinks it to be mesentery or lymphatic adenitis.

My question to anyone who has had lymphoma, would the pressure and pain be constant, or does it go away for periods of time (if you even feel any pain, I’m not sure)? And did you have more than one area that was affected and not simply just one lymph node? Any information from someone has experience with this would be helpful.
Hey, thanks for all the responses so far. Definitely think I am going in for a second opinion here in a week or so. Thank you for all the positive responses and encouragement from people who have had it… you definitely ease my mind a bit.

Hi.

I have a 2-3 mm stone that was diagnosed on Dec 1st in the ER when I had excrutiating pain…was told I passed the stone from my kidney. 1st stone ever, have no clue what is going on, scared and was set for surgery today! I postponed to next Tuesday.

I had a CT Scan at the ER on Dec 1st showing the stone in the left ureter. I had a CT-Scan/IVP on Dec 19th showing the stone at the entrance of the bladder. No swelling in my kindeys.

It has been over 5 weeks now since the ER. I have had 2 bouts of antibiotics for infection – blood in my urine (only seen by me as a little string in my strainer) but told blood in my urine with urinalysis. No cultures grew though.

I have tried the fluid/activity increase – lemon juice straight and mixed with oil – coke/asparagus – NOTHING is working. I can’t seem to pass this small stone and I am scared and over anxious aboout surgery and stent placement. The stone is slowly moving obviously, but hasnt passed since the CTScan-IVP

Im 19. since 2003 history of kidney stones and UTI symptoms. More recently I have been having urinary frequency and flank pain. CT scan shows no stone. IVP normal. Xrays normal. No infection. Doctor gave me meds for Overactive bladder… I DONT THINK THATS WHATS WRONG!!! I took the meds for about a week, and all it did was mask my feeling of having to go so I had to essentially "guess" when I had to go to the bathroom, and I had to strain when I did…side effects nose bleeds, extrememly dry mouth, nausea…..so i stopped them. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!? Nothing is working. This is the second urologist who has basically given up on me and just given me meds for Overactive bladder. Should I go to a nephrologist? Find a 3rd opinion? Could this be a serious problem that they are overlooking? Kidney failure/infection?

My boyfriend had to go to the ER with a kidney stone, for the third time this year! He passed it, but they told him that the CT scan showed a few little stones floating around in his kidney. What on earth causes kidney stones with such frequency??

I have looked at a million websites and they all say ‘pain while urinating’. In my case, though, I am having pain after urination. Is that normal?? does that mean that I am getting ready to pass the stone finally? Please help, can’t afford to go to the doctor and this is my first instance with stones, so, I am very blind to what is going on with me.
I have already been diagnosed with kidney stones though. Just by chance they showed up on a CT Scan at the Hospital.

I have had a on again, off again sharp, burning pain in my right rib area. I went to the doctors and had blood work and a urinalysis which both came back clean. CT scan revealed a 2mm kidney stone. I’m not sure if this stone is the cause of my pain though. from everything i’ve read kidney stone pain occurs mostly in the back, while my pain is in the front, and feels very close to the surface (my skin in that area and corner of my ribs are tender to the touch). Also, the pain has been pretty stationary…not downward moving as i have read should be the case. Does this sound like kidney stone pain? Please HELP!

I’ve had two kidney stones previously, so when my back started hurting about 6 months ago, I figured it was time for #3. Went to a urologist for the first time ever (first two stones were Emergency Room visits), they did an CT Scan and x-ray, no stones. So they suggested I see my regular MD to see if it might be muscle or nerve related.

I don’t have a regular MD, so I visited a pain relief Dr. He put me on some pain meds and I have my EMG in 1 week. My question is this, what does the EMG look for? Frankly, I’ve recently “self-diagnosed” myself, I think it is muscle related, not nerve. Although, the pain does go down my leg at times. But it’s mostly just a constant pain in my lower back, near the hips.

What can I expect? If the EMG doesn’t show any nerve damage, what will they do next?

I have been having a ton of problems and this is going to be a long post, but I sincerely hope someone can help.

I’m a 20 year old female.

It started in December when I was having depression so I went on Prozac. My doctor added lithium after I had no improvement after 6 weeks. My depression went away very soon. I then passed a kidney stone and a CT scan revealed that I had 3 of them. Haven’t had any trouble with those and I haven’t felt depressed since then.

About a week after the kidney stone, I started having shortness of breath. Not really shortness of breath, but the feeling of not being able to get enough air sometimes and like I have to take a really deep and uncomfortable breath to get enough air. I think it’s worse when I’m talking to someone. Over the next month or two I also developed many other symptoms. My eyes are dry (I can’t even wear my contacts all day anymore because they bug me and I usually end up switching to my glasses a few times a day so that I can see better). My mouth is also dry, I thought I was very thirsty at first, but I think it’s more of a dry mouth thing because it gets worse when I talk. I also have been getting a generalized itching in various different places all over my body. I get really tired for a couple hours about 3 times a day too. I feel totally fatigued, and not even in a depressed way. I WANT to be doing things but I just can’t. Finally, I get these sharp pains all around my abdominal area. Usually they are in the front below my ribs or in the back near where my kidneys are. Oh! I’ve also been having random muscle twitches (one of them is on my cheek right by my nose and above my lip and the other one is on my back behind my right kidney). Not really sure if that’s related. I also get really dizzy and blackout almost every time I stand up, and my coordination and memory are worse than usual. I’ve lost about 15 pounds since December. Lately I’ve also been having night sweats and chills through the night and at times in the day.

I have been to the doctor. My CBC, kidney function, pulmonary function, lung CT, brain MRI, and echocardiogram were all normal. She also checked for myasthenia gravis, it was negative. My thyroid was normal but the last time we checked it was early December, when my only symptom was depression. I’ve been checked for lupus 3 times in my life (the last time being about 3 years ago because of joint pain), they were all negative, but I’m thinking maybe it could be some other autoimmune disorder?

I’m no longer taking the lithium and prozac, I took Wellbutrin for a while and now I’m taking effexor. I take Ambien every night to help me sleep because I wake up after about 3 hours if I don’t. My doctor wants me to see a pulmonologist next to make sure there are no other tests we should do, but I’m sure there won’t be. My old doctor eventually gave up and said it was just depression, but after over 2 months of this I really feel there is no way that is the case. I wish I could figure out what it is before things get worse.

Any ideas? Please?

Please don’t just tell me to see a doctor! I’ve been going to the doctor for a month now and so far they have no idea what’s wrong with me. I’m waiting on some more test results, but hoping that somebody on here may have had similar issues that could shed some light on the situation.

Here are my symptoms:
-Kidney area pain on the right side (Originally thought it was a kidney stone, but all tests show my kidneys are fine)
-Abdominal pain also on the right side slightly above and inward of my hip bone
-Very small amount of blood in my urine
-Slightly elevated white blood cell count and higher levels of calcium (still within "normal" range)
-Nausea which occasionally turns in to vomiting
-Fatigue (Sometimes mild, sometimes feels like mono)
-Very small, itchy bug-bite type things all over my body (Possibly unrelated. I haven’t given my dogs a flea treatment in awhile, but my husband doesn’t have any "bites")

Most of these symptoms come and go as far as extremity. It seems like each day, or portion of the day a different symptom is the dominant issue and the others are barely noticeable. Sometimes they all come on together. Like I said, this has been going on for a month now, and I’m starting to get scared because of where the pain is and the vomiting. NOT good signs…

About two weeks before this started, I was diagnosed with a sever Vitamin D deficiency, my doctor said it was the second lowest she’d ever seen! They had me taking 50,000 UI of vitamin D once a week, they have since told me to stop, but my problems are still occurring.

I have had an x-ray, CT Scan and ultrasound to search my abdomen and everything looks normal. No inflammation, no stones. I’ve had a 24 hour urine collection, as well as a LOT of blood tests (sorry don’t know what they were all for) but everything is normal. I am currently waiting on test results for Hyperparathyroidism. I have been doing a lot of my own research and everything I’ve found, keeps pointing me to this, so I requested the doctor to run the tests.

I was laid off last week and my insurance is only good until the end of the month, so on my next appointment I want to go in with a list of things for them to check before my insurance is up, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the quick response! I forgot to mention that before all this stuff started, the doctor thought I had an ovarian cyst… I’ve now had two ultrasounds to look for that and I’m waiting on the results.
Just got test results… No Hyperparathyroidism, and I have an ovarian cyst, but it’s pimple sized. The doctor said it’s so small that they wouldn’t bother removing it and it’s not causing my current issues.

About two weeks ago I started to have pain in what i thought was my back but it was in the kidney area. I waited about a week and when it did not go away I I went to the Dr. He did a dipstick urine test and said there was red blood cells in my urine but no other symptoms of an infection. He figured I had a kidney stone and sent me on my way with some pain killers and cipro. The next day I was in pain still and decided I wanted to go to the ER to see if there was something going on with my kidney. They ran blood work, all OK. Urine again had microscopic blood but no signs of infection. Got a CT scan as well and no kidney stones.
I have spoken with two close relatives one who is a Dr. and one who is an ultrasound tech. I think I have kidney or bladder cancer. I do not know what else I could possibly have. I have had this pain for two weeks. I am so stressed out over this. Again I was reassured that a CT scan is very good at detecting cancer and something would have shown up. My husband called the ER yesterday and had me speak to a nurse there who basically told me that I was all worked up and that I did not have cancer and to calm down and stop freaking my husband out.
I am 31 years old. I used to smok probably about 1/2 pack a day. Since my daughter was born I have cut down to maybe 2-5 a day. Help please!!!!!

Around this same time last year I had a kidney infection that lasted about 2 weeks. The only thing that really felt wrong then was I had a lot of pain in my lower left side of my back so I went to the doctor and did a urine test and they said there were white blood cells found. They said it could either be an infection or kidney stones. They prescribed me some Bactrim and Oxycodone. Less than a week into the medication I felt completely better.

This time I have the same symptoms – pain in my lower left side of my back. It’s been a total of 2 weeks and 4 days since the symptoms surfaced. The pain is much worse this time. I also feel like I have a fever off and on, I have almost no appetite, and I feel nauseated often. I went to the doctor again and they prescribed me the same drugs but 2 weeks later I am not feeling any better whatsoever. On top of that, the pain killers I think are causing my nausea. I have to lay down almost constantly and sitting in a chair is agony. I went back to the doctor and got Ciproflaxacin and almost a week into that one… still not better. I wake up in the middle of the night in so much pain even last night. The pain killers don’t last long enough during the night to let me sleep. I just feel terrible all the time now.

I’m beginning to think this is more than a kidney infection. The doctor prescribed a CT Scan but I don’t want to fork over the funds to do that if it is just an infection and I’m being impatient.

How long could/should a kidney infection last when taking all of your medication correctly?
How long should I wait before I go to the hospital to get a CT Scan?

Ok so last week I went to the ER because of a kidney stone and they said they only did a urine test before doing the CT Scan (which was obviously negative). I passed the stone Saturday with no problems. Since about Sunday night I’ve been having sorness in my breasts and my nipples are bright pink and very very very sensitive to the touch. I’ve been peeing like crazy (the Dr. said I did not have an infection so I know it’s not that). I’ve been a little moody and very tired. My periods are irregular so I don’t know when I O’d, but I’m going to test in the morning then if it’s negative I’m testing again the 16th. I had all of the symptoms above with DS but has anyone else ever had their nipples get bright pink and be so sensitive before getting their BFP??

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was pregnant with my daughter over 2 years ago. My thyroid then regulated itself halfway through my pregnancy. About 9 months afterI had my daughter(Feb.2006), I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. In March 2007 I became pregnant with my son and was again diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which I am still dealing with. At 6 months pregnant with this last pregnancy, I found out that I had kidney stones. There were three stones in each kidney that were about 10mm in size and a cyst on my left kidney. I thought that those had broken up and I was passing a lot of stones about the size of small peas. I recently went in for a CT scan to see if any stones were left. I just got a call from my urologist who told me that there were even more stones now than there were before. What could be causing this? I have changed my diet as suggested by my urologist. I do also have a history of kidney stones in my family.

I recently went to the ER with sever side pain and found out that I had 1 kidney stone. They did a CT scan and told me the stone was about to fall into my bladder and that I should pass it within 12 hours. 3 hours later I passed the stone. It’s been 2 days now and I am having some dull pain in my lower back. It’s not in the same area the sever pain was and it’s not NEARLY as bad. Is this common after passing a kidney stone? I also still have the urge to urinate quit frequently even after just urinating. The doctor told me that was normal when you have kidney stones, but I’m still experiencing this after 2 days again not as bad. Is all this normal?

I went to the ER with bad back pain and lower abdominal pain. They did a CT scan and found a couple of kidney stones and multiple cysts on both kidneys. The ER Doc and Radiologist both thought it was polycystic kidney disease, but I don’t have an appointment with the Urologist for another month and a half. Does anyone know of any guidelines I should follow in the meantime?

I recently had a CT scan for what I thought was a pulled muscle in my lower abdomen, possibly groin muscle. The scan showed that I had several kidney cysts as well as an obstruction, more than likely a stone, in one of my kidneys. I have had no other symptoms such as infections or incontinence-kidney infections or back pain-nothing there-just the ab and groin pain. Could this be my problem?

Has anyone heard of this treatment for kidney stones? Boyfriend had a painful kidney stone last year, he went to the ER and got painkilllers/antibiotics, CT scan to confirm there was one small stone, but they gave him a strainer and told him to wait for it to pass.
He waited 3-days ina Vicodin stupor.
Then I read in Men’s Health magazine, that lemon juice is being studied for stones….he was ready for the whole ordeal to be over and drank a liter of lemonade….literally 1 hour later he passed the stone, but it was in several pieces (looked like sand) and NO pain?!
Does this only work with certain stones?
And how often should this be done to prevent them, if it does….I feel like it defitinely worked – they told him he would most likely have significant pain…but alas, none.

Ok, here is my question. My doctor and I both think I have Crohn’s disease but my tests just aren’t confirming anything. I have mouth and throat ulcers since childhood ,chronic diarrhea(4-10 times a day) and sometimes constipation, frequent abdominal pain, inflamation in eyes chronically, malabsorption, some bloody stools, red hard lumps on face, chest and legs(but not shins) pain when I eat, pain with bowel movement, anal fissures, bloating , pressure, pain, severe belching and distended stomach. The tests so far have been small bowel follow through, showed nothing! MRCP showed possible pancreatic head dilation? Ct Scan showed kidney stones and something with the base of the lungs but unremakable otherwise. Colonoscopy showed mild inflamation of sigmoid colon with pettechia. Nothing conclusive. Doctor says he knows we could get the diagnosis with capsule endoscopy. SO what ya think? Please someone with Crohns please help!!
I am asking for my own peace of mind. I am seeing a gastro and he is dealing with it. I guess what I’m asking is anyone that has crohn’s could probably tell me if anything like this happens to others with crohns disease or if it is gotta be something else entirely and I need a new doctor.
