I went to my primary today [income based clinic] for a followup from my ER visit, brought the stone assuming they’d want to test it but the doctor did nothing of the sort.
I told him I wanted to know what it was made of so I could make diet and/or lifestyle decisions to prevent more and he said it didn’t matter. I told him I’d read most are calcium and that testing can be done for that but he insisted that the likelihood of it being composed of calcium was almost zero.
.. which I also read most stones are made of.
So when I got around to asking the doctor if I could drink or smoke cigarettes at all I was already skeptical of the validity of what he was telling me.
He responded that I could never again in my life consume alcohol and needed to quit smoking immediately.

Now I’m not claiming to know anything about the condition from what I’ve read online, nor am I arguing that smoking or having a beer is good for my health but I would like to have a second opinion on the matter.
I’m 22 and just saying I’d like to go out and have a drink on occasion.
Furthermore, should I try finding another doctor to test the stone?

I am currently on kidney stone #5 in 3 years..this one has been there for 1 1/2 weeks. My brother doesn’t believe me that it hurts so bad. He says him having mono for a week is way worse than my kidney stone! Haha! Are kidney stones worse for women or men? Is it fair to compare it to being kicked in the balls during that sharp stabbing pain with stones? No guy I know has had one to ask.

I try to compare it as the worst cramps you’ve ever had, plus being stabbed and kicked all at the same time, and STILL doesn’t do it justice!

Also, I keep reading many false things on here. One person said that when you have lithotripsy they put you in a tub of water and shock it out…it has nothing to do with water and they knock you completely out. Stints are something the doctor must put in AND take out, you can’t do it on your own! You should always try to catch the stone, and coffee filters work fine. And no, peeing into that strainer is not the most annoying part of a stone! Sheesh!
I’ve had many kidney stones before so I know what they are (mine are calcium).

It’s good to know that there is at least a medicine out there..I’ll have to ask about it the next time I’m in!

Over the last 2 years I have been diagnosed four times with Kidney stones (Calcium). I’m a 42 year old male who is about 40 pounds overweight. I also have a condition called episodic ataxia and am currently taking the drug acetazolamide. I was hospitalized every time b/c I was unable to pass the stones on my own. Either they were too big or they were stuck.

This last trip to the ER my urine tested positive for renal insufficency. I need to get to the bottom of this. The medication I take for the ataxia has a side affect of kidney stones. According to my neurologist I need to go off the meds to stop the stones. According to my urologist, its not the cause of the stones.

Please offer any suggestions. thanks

so for the last several weeks i have had blood in my urine, but the doctors have not figured out why yet. (they have tested for infections and other problems of that nature) But on Saturday night i was in the car with my boyfriend and i suddenly felt the most intense crampy spasmy like pain in my back on the left side below my ribs. the pain was horrible, so bad that i passed out and he brought me to the ER, where they did CT scans, EKG, blood tests, etc and came up with nothing still. :( The doc told me that it could have been a kidney stone (without calcium or something) that wouldnt show up in the scans or i could have already passed the stone. Since then i have felt mostly fine, except a few less intense pains in the same area every once in a while. I’m going back to my regular doctor later this week for more tests, but im just wondering if this sounds like kidney stones? or if anyone else has any other thoughts? I’m just curious !(im 19 and no family history of kidney stones)

I am "turning a new leaf" in my life. Trying to make healthier choices because I have realized that I am 20 and already have too many health problems to worry about. I don’t want my next 60 plus years on this earth to be miserable and filled with doctor appointments and prescriptions. So I am making some changes. I’m starting small so I don’t overwhelm myself and give up. I am a HUGE pop drinker. I used to drink mainly Mountain Dew with a Pepsi here and there. Then a few months ago I started drinking more Diet Pepsi than Mountain Dew to cut down on the calories. But still, 2 twenty ounce Diet Pepsi’s at work then maybe a Mountain Dew or 2 when I come home is NOT GOOD. And to add to that I have kidney stones often. Probably due to excess pop but doctors seem to think its due more to calcium. Anyway after all the explanation my question is, Can I switch to drinking green tea? I love Lipton Diet Green Tea Mixed Berry. I have researched and some say it is better for you than pop, some say it’s not and to go buy the actual leaves and brew it yourself. But honestly, for someone as busy as I am and with limited "quick" options for satisfying drinks (I will drink water but I despise drinking water while eating. It is very unsatisfying to me.) what can I do?! I figured I would go with green tea because it has benefits but do I really need to go through all the trouble of brewing it myself or will the bottle stuff do? Some insight please!! Hope this isn’t all too confusing! lol

Ok I know that kidney stones form when there is too much calcium in your urine. But why do they say pop causes kidney stones? I’m just a little confused. What ingredient in pop causes kidney stones because the last time I checked none of my pop had calcium in it. I am trying to pass a stone and I bought some Sprite, Fresca, and Peach flavored sparkling water. I thought that maybe because they are clear and naturally flavored they will help me drink more liquids and hopefully pass this stone faster. But are they helping me by keeping me drinking more or hurting me because it is "pop" that could lead to another stone in the future. Also if anyone has any tips on how to pass a stone faster please let me know! Thanks for the help!

I know that there are different types of kidney stones (calcium, uric acid, etc.) but if they are able to dissolved, can they be dissolved the same way or do you need different treatments for different stones?

I had a calcium stone removed by surgery last year. Is it safe to use whey protein after working out with enough water? Or should I just stick to natural protein like meat, eggs and milk.

I’ve been dating an older guy for the past 2 months & a week ago, he had an attack of kidney stones & passed 2. He passed one at the hospital & the other one at home. When he passed the 2nd stone, I heard him scream from the bathroom & it just sounded like he had a knife coming out of him. He said he doesn’t mind being so vocal when he passes a kidney stone cause they’re so painful! My mom said its like having a baby for a man? when he took the stone to his urologist, he told him that this stone that he had passed was a "masterpiece!" it was that big & odd-shaped. My bf acted like it was no big deal & said, "all i did was pass a calcium stone!" what does it feel like for a man when he pisses out a stone through his dick? my bf said he was pissing fire into a strainer, any other men get that too? apparently he offended one of his ex gf’s that he had a baby with because in the delivery room he said, "at least she can get an epidural, nothing like passing a kidney stone for a man!"

hey =D

I heard somewhere that the formation of kidney stones are a type of chemical precipitation (something to do with a Calcium build-up?) Is this true?

TIA,

Kidney stones are a result of precipitation of CaC2O4 in the urine of patients. Calcium has a constant concentration of 5.0 x 10^-3 M. Oxalate ion concentration varies depending on diet. At what concentration of oxalate will kidney stones start to form?

I tried using the Ksp value and equation and solving for the concentration of oxalate. Is that the correct way or is there more to it?

thanks

I am fighting with my third kidney stone in 2 years. stones dont relly run in my family but kidney problems do. luckily this one im fighting with now is small enough to pass on its own. the others were not. i dont have insurance so i just went down to the e.r. for this one. they identified it as a stone and said it would pass on its own in about 3 days and gave me pain meds. but nobody has relly told me how to prevent them. since this is my third i think its time to start doing some preventative actions. i know drink lots of water a day sure. but how much exactly? what should i eat and not eat? dose anybody know? oh by the way all three times they were calcium oxelate stones if that helps. well any tips for me?

Just lately I was informed that I was prone to Kidney stones and I am only 16, I know bummer :/.
Anyways I have a horrible diet and I mean Horrible! and one of my close friends nearly died from not getting help while passing a kidney stone and during a couple kidney stones I passed during the ages 12-14 I hid from people cause the pain was the worst I had felt in my life and I was scared it was something bad (not that kidney stones aren’t), it was very dumb of me and I was lucky that they were small ones and I could pass them on my own, and trust me if u had kidney stones as a child you would know that it is one of if not the most pain full experience you will ever have especial without any drugs. sorry enough poor me I am not here to make people feel sorry for me but at the moment my diet is well I was never really taught proper diet and up in till lately it has been fast food.
Honestly I do not think I drink 1 drop of just water a day for years only soda not like there is not water in soda but I know now that its not healthy at all and I am kinda ashamed in my self for never drinking water except on days I was super thirsty and wanted instant gratification. anyways I am going to try to make a drastic recovery if I still can and eat healthier and drink more water. anyways I want to know foods and drinks that are kidney stone friendly and stuff I shouldn’t eat or drink any help would be greatly appreciated. Even tho the doctor told me soda doesn’t have anything to do with kidney stones and its all calcium I still have a feeling that the several cokes I drink a day to stay hydrated must be contributing to it. so please any drinks or foods that wont cause it or maybe even help get rid of them would be great!

Sorry for getting carried away I know it must be annoying its just every time i think about the pain i get like this :/ and thank you for reading it if you did all help will be greatly appreciated. Also please do not flame this, i did not mean to be mean or anything like that.

I never, ever want to get kidney stones. So I am currently taking three tablespoons of highly concentrated lemon juice in water every day. And 1-2 times a week I also ass 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract to the lemon juice.

As I adsorb a lot of vitamins and minerals as well, I’ve heard that calcium is not good in the kidney stone criteria. I take a calcium tablet a day that contains 600mg of calcium. Is this bad?

My doctors nurse called me and said that I was being referred to a hematologist because I recently had some blood work done and it showed my calcium and protein levels high, she said it wasn’t anything that I needed to go to the er for but i would be going to the hematologist to see what it is? so i didn’t really get any questions answered from her, now Im freaking out because my grandfather just died from leukemia and now Im convinced Im going to get cancer. I seen some things say stuff about hyperthyroidism, which i do have ALOT of the symptoms, but that only answers the calcium being high not the protein…or can they both be connected to this hyperthyroidism? I wanted to get tested because I have really bad anxiety…which has made it hard for me not to eat i think, or could that be the protein thing making me not hungry. Ive also lost 14 pounds in the past 2 months, not ever really hungry, had kidney stones about 2 1/2 months ago, very forgetfull, headaches, anxious, feel tired. Im only 22 and have a 3 year old son so I cant afford to get sick, plus i ddon’tknow if i could handle it. If anyone knows about any of these things your advice is greatly appreciated!

Body uses calcium we consume. Excess is flushed away through Kidney as far as i know. Which is believed to be the cause of formation of stones in Kidneys.
I want my body to use all the calcium i take in.
Workouts maybe the best possibility but I wanna know what kind of workouts if it is so?

Thank you.

Are they made of calcium and how do they form? Old people are supposed to need calcium, against osteo-porosis, but won’t extra calcium cause stones?

For awhile I was having trouble with my bladder and I narrowed it down to my intake of sugar, juices and anything acidic. About five days ago I was dealing with constipation and decided to drink a little prune juice. I drank maybe about 6 ounces for 3 days straight.

Well I got this over-active feeling my my bladder like I do if and when I have juices or too much sugar. Usually, I avoid anything to upset it and drink water. It’s not been 3 days, I’ve barely eatin anything and I feel worse.

The obvious answer would be "go see a doctor". I don’t have the money to go see a doctor right now. I really just would like to figure out what’s wrong. I’ve had these urge feelings before and as soon as I stopped eatin anything with sugar or juices it goes away, except now.

In the last few days, these is what I’ve consumed:
-fish sticks,
-potato(only 1)
-a few chips(salty)
-milk
-water
-almonds
-oatmeal

I also too a over-the-counter bladder infection test and it was negative. I know I don’t have an infection and my mom thinks it could be a kidney stone, but I’m not really in any pain, other then the constant urges and maybe a little cramping.

I’ve also gone all over the internet and it looks like it could be one of many issues. Is it possible the "fish oil" in the fish sticks is causing this? too much calcium? I’ve drank water to flush my system, usually works, but isn’t now.

I have had protein in my urine since I can remember. My new dr had me do a 24 hr sample and my protein was 19 points high. He is sending me to a nephrologist.
Would being a vegeterian help this? I have heard that light exercise is good but not running and aerobics?
I have had drs tell me I should see a specialist before but there are times I don’t have any protein or light protein. I hope this isn’t serious. My endocrinologist ask that my dr refer me to a specialist after blood and urine tests taken for my thyroid. My stomach, legs, ankles, feet and sometimes hands and face swell. I have a lot of kidney infections and every now and then I have calcium, liver enzymes, blood, and keytones but 95% of the time at least a little protein but the amout really varies.
I had a large number of calcium in my urine a few weeks ago and then I went to er with so much pain. They said they saw a ruptured ovarian cyst but I really think I may have passed a stone because a wk later I didnt have the calcium in my urine?
I’m not sure what all of this mean?

my bf has had kidney stones a number of times, but only twice since I’ve known him, which is all within the last year. Back in June, he had an attack on a friday afternoon and I spent most of the evening in the ER with him. He was suppose to take his youngest son and ex gf to the airport the next morning, but if he didnt pass it before then, he was going to have me take them and i didnt like her. so he kept drinking and peeing and finally passed it at like 2 in the morning. he said it hurt bad when it came out, compared to some of his other stones, he yelled! I was pretty horny that night and after he passed it and got into bed to get a few hours of sleep, I kept him up and we have sex instead. he got his stone analyzed and they told him it was a calcium stone. it was the size of a dried pea, which i guess explains how painful it was. afterwards he went in for some tests where put that scope or w/e it is up his weiner and he ended up with a stent being put in. so we didnt have sex for awhile after that. not much longer, I found out that I was pregnant which means i got pregnant after he passed that stone. so with a new baby on the way, he was saying he wanted to record the birth of our baby when the times comes. we argued about it a lot, so i suggested that if he’s going to record me giving birth, then i should record him passing a kidney stone. to my surprise, he agreed to it. he said he’d like to have a clip of him standing over the pot peeing out a stone. so on sunday, he had another stone and i recorded it on via my cell phone camera like he wanted to. i captured his face and then just focused on down both as he peed. its basically a video of a man standing over the toilet, holding his penis with his foreskin pulled back and peeing. a small stone pops out into the strainer. thats it. also, my gf said that having a baby with an older man, such as my bf and add in the stone problems, will be bad for the baby. his other kids seem healthy.

My health is terrible. i have pots syndrome bad. but let me go back in time and name my health problems in order. it gets confusing so try to keep up. alright. i was always in perfect health my whole life untill 3 years ago. i started to develop acid reflux. 6 moths later i started to develop costochondritis. some time after that osteoauthritis builds up in my chest and spreds to the shoulders. after that kidney stones start. after that pots syndrome starts to develop slowley. now in present day time i have pots so bad i cant even really move around my house. now after some reserch i learned. that acid reflux can cause costochondritis. the costo. can cause athritis. people with certail types of authritis can develop kidney stones as the body tries to filter out the calcium in the joints. and some types of authritis can be responsible for triggering pots syndrome. so call me crazy but i think my entire health problem can be blamed on acid reflux. it sees a little out thare yes but to me it makes perfect since. i eat way to much at one time and i keep snacking all day. ie at way more than i should in a day. and i cant work so i am poor. so the food i eat is all prepackaged junk. i think if i change my diet and invest in nothing but good healthy foods and no bad foods at all. over time i will get better. do you think i am right? or am i just nutz?

I went to the hospital last night because I was having contractions. Well come to find out they were brought on by a UTI. My 3rd one this pregnancy. They also found protein in my urine along with high blood pressure "the start of preeclampsia" and last but not least crystals in my urine "they are calcium" My question is how fast can these crystals turn into a stone? The reason I ask is I have been having this awful pain in my right side around the kidney area, and it hurts to the point that I want to cry.. It is starting to get uncomfortable when I go the the bathroom as well.. The doctor ordered me to do a 24 hour urinalysis, to see what all is really going on, and how bad everything is. I just dont think I can handle this pain for that long of a time. Not with me being pregnant.. Please anybody what can I do to help comfort this pain? "30weeks pregnant"
