okay this is going to be kinda long so please hang in there. in November i stopped taking my birth control about 2 moths after that i started cramping and bad lower back pain 3 weeks out of the month and i would be really sensitive to the point where my toddler couldnt sit on my lap. month after month this would happen i went in and my doc said i had BV she put me on meds and the pain came again i though okay the meds didnt help. one night i had horrible pain i almost went to the ER all i could do was lay on the couch so i made another appointment with my doc for the next day and she said my BV was gone so she said im going to get you an ultrasound and i bet you have ovarian cyst and it may have ruptured last night. My ultrasound was scheduled for a month after that doc appointment the pain came again i was thinking yes they will have to see something but nothing was found.. this month still have the pain but now my right kidney is hurting and thinking back they have hurt off and on but i just didnt think anything of it i remember being out with some friends having a couple drink and going pee and almost in tears in the bars bathroom because my kidneys hurt. today i noticed my finger nails and toe nails look a little funny, ridges going from base to top of nail. and on my toe nails my half moon almost covers my whole nail so i looked it up thinking i was lacking some vitamins come to find out they are both related to kidney disease/failure. i am about a half a pack a day smoker have a drink every once in awhile never had kidney stones im a 23 year old female i am going to make an appointment with my family doc today but would love to see what you all think thanks!
*im wondering if these thing could all be related to kidney problems i have thought i might have endo but have not gone back to my gyno. oh and another thing is in feb. i thought i was coming down with something bc i was tired all the time didnt want to move or talk tired it lasted for about a month straight not sure if thats something i should include!

We live in Hawaii. My husband was seen at the ER August 14th because he couldnt urinate or pass bowels. They did bloodwork on him & gave him pain meds, was going to send him home. When I inquired about the cause, he told us that "if you want, I can send you to the other ER & they can do a CT scan, but you’re going to have to wait long time".

At the 2nd ER, the dr examined my husbands penis & balls. He told us all the bloodwork came back normal & was about to send us home. I insisted that we came there for a CT scan. SO, they finally gave him a CT scan & found a kidney stone & a what appears to be a rectal mass. The dr & nurse explained that sometimes stuff shows up on a CT scan that isnt actually there so he could have cancer, but it could be nothing,& make sure he follows up w/his regular dr & see a specialist. After we informed the dr that my husband didnt have a regular dr established, he recommended us to a dr, who we thought was going to be a specialist. When we called to get an appointment, we discovered that it was an internal medicine dr & to see him, we would have to change our PCP to that dr who is 25 miles away from us. So since that dr wasnt a specialist, we opted to see a PCP that is closer to us, so that whenever my husband needed to see the PCP, it was close (we have QUEST HMSA medical insurance & no cash since my husband is out of work).

We went to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Center & seen DR. LIAO. Worst experience EVER. We could barely understand anything he said when he asked us what ER we went to & what he was seeing my husband for, told my husband he had to lotion & lose weight, then without looking at his paperwork from the ER that I gave him, he left the room. Then the nurse came in & told us to come back in a month for recheck. When I asked the nurse why in one month, she said for recheck. I told her the dr didnt look at his paperwork & explained my husband was in alot of pain & needed to see the specialist right away. She asked me what type of insurance we had & when I told her Quest, she made a face and told me thats why we had to wait a long time. SO naturally my voice raised when I insisted they refer my husband to a specialist immediately & thats when the dr started yelling at us from another examining room to go see another Dr if you dont like it!

We then had to find another PCP. He referred us out to a specialist. We drove there & my husband said that the specialist came in & told my husband that our dr referred him to the wrong specialist, & wrote down information for the urologist. He did not even look at the image of the CT scan or examine my husband. 3 days later, my husband passed a BM with lots of bright red blood. I took him to his Dr & he immediately send us to the emergency room (another different one, not the 1st 2 that we went to). At the emergency room, they gave him pain medication, took a urine sample, & informed us that there was nothing about a rectal mass in my husbands record from the ER. They gave him instructions to follow up w/his PCP & the urologist for his kidney stones and did not examine him or get a sample of his stool. When I asked about what we should do about the rectal mass, they said I dont know. Its weird and confusing because it doesnt say anything about a rectal mass in his report. BUT HE HAS BLOOD IN HIS STOOL! We were then told it could just be from a hemmoroid. Physically & emotionally exhausted & defeated, we went home.

We went back to my husbands PCP the next morning & explained everything that happened w/the specialist & the ER, & the Dr shook his head & then told us to follow up w/the urologist & see if the urologist. When I asked about the rectal mass, they said the urologist can help us because shes a urologist.

I called the ER that told us about the rectal mass & explained everything and they said they cant discuss anything over the phone, but EVERYTHING should be in the report. They wouldnt let me talk to the dr because they said that he couldnt discuss patient info over the phone. They wouldnt tell me his schedule either. I called our medical insurance & they told me to follow up w/the PCP or change PCPs or get a 2nd opinion. We did but because the possible rectal mass is not noted in the report, no one has examined him.

My husbands TDI is pending & no savings. I need to complete a 3 wk class in order to get assistance. BUT I have no cash, bus pass, or gas or family to help. I called the welfare worker & explained our situation & she said there is no way around it, I have to comply w/the class 1st. So I have no childcare & no $ or transportation. We used the pay from my husbands last check to pay our rent & put gas in the car. Now its gone. My phones going to get turned off soon along w/my internet. So then, I wont even be able to call or email!

I dont know what to do about anything. Any positive, educational answers would be greatly appreciated. Please no personal rude comments. I have enough

I had kidney stone surgery June of last year well to make a long story short am bleeding when I urinate again and my back is really hurting have a urologist appointment this afternoon and just know that he’s gonna tell me that I’ll need surgery again (I don’t pass the stones)
MY question is this when my back first started acting up again my urologist told me that they could not go and get the stones unless am in acute distress because it would actually hurt my kidneys? Has anyone heard that be4? It just doesn’t make since to us at all?

Yesterday I took an 89 year old man to his cardiologist appointment and he arrived at the office with intense pain in his lower sternum. The cardiologist immediately examined his aorta because he was concerned that pain in that area could possibly be his aorta. But the doctor ended up telling him he should go to the ER next door because he was in too much pain.

We spent the whole day there, 8 hours to be exact. They did many lab tests, blood, urine, CT scan of abdominum with contrast, ultra sound of aorta, chest x-ray, EKG, all of which came back fine. For awhile, his blood pressure dipped super low, 90/45, which in the past has always happened when he had an infection. No infection in his lab work though. I am baffled!

I’ve been his caretaker for 5 years and he has never had such an acute attack of pain like that. Blood work said everything was fine. The pain seemed to travel down from his sternum to his abdominum, and then back again. Could it be kidney stones? Would the lab work have shown if he had kidney stones? Is there something they could have missed?

Usually your blood pressure will increase with pain, but his dropped very low, considering his appointment with the cardiologist was for high blood pressure, which was increasing in spite of being on three different blood pressure medications. Any insight would be appreciated. They were very packed at the ER yesterday, and sometimes ER’s are not the best place to get a diagnosis of some kind of disease.

My son is 16 yo and is having pain when he goes to the bathroom. He is also having some pain in his stomach(possibly bladder area) and he said his back hurt a while ago. He has an appointment on Friday and is taking some medication right now that turns his urine blue until then. I have had a history of stones myself and have had gout since I was 16 in my big toe. His father had a stone a few months ago .Could he possibly have a stone? He swears it’s not an STD…..I made sure I brought it up. I wasn’t 100% sure how hereditary kidney stones were. Or could it just be a urinary tract infection? And yes, he is already going to the Dr. to be 100% sure. I was just curious what others thought it could be.

I was act the dr. a while back and after a ct scan was informed that I have a small kidney stone and an ovarian cyst. I was told to get the cyst checked out by a gyno so they could do a ultrasound for it. I haven’t done that yet. (appointment is in 2 weeks) I have been taking vicodin for the pain, but the last few days, I have been having really thick, reddish-brown discharge (not my period) does this sound like I need to go back to the dr. again, or is this just something thats going on because of the kidney stone? How long does it take for a stone to pass?
Thank you.

3 Fridays ago I woke up at 3am and felt sick to my stomach but we had an appointment that I couldn’t miss. So I went to that after the appointment I told my mom my right side hurt we thought it was appendicitis but we went to the ER and they said that I had a kidney stone on both sides and that it would pass in a couple of days. Well 7 days later they didn’t pass so we went to the urologist and he said I have 5 kidney stones on my left and 4 on my right. I drink a lot of water too so my mom and I were shocked. So now I have a ureteral stent in to open up my ureter so they can take the kidney stones out. Then two weeks after that there doing the right side. This hole stupid process is taking six weeks of my summer away. How am I going to prevent them and why do I have so many I’ve never had them before and I’m only 14

im 16 and im a regular patient at great ormaod street children’s hospital for my kidneys, i have nephrocalcinosis in both kidneys which causes pain and stones. for the past few months iv been in and out of extreme agony really, so iv been back and forward to gosh having ultrasounds and on each one it showed nothing that could be causing the pain. so they sent me for a ct scan about 4 weeks ago and they called us up about a week ago saying there is something on my left side which COULD be causing the pain, were gonna discuss it fully at an appointment iv got tomorrow. but i was just wondering if there is a stone do you think they ll remove it via lazer or by actually going up there? iv had of these kind of ops before and each time they’ve actually gone up like,my wee hole lol. but atm im on my period so do you think theyll make me wait until iv come off or what? thankssss

My mom has been sick for about a week now with terrible pain located around the left kidney. She recently has come up with some other symptoms like nausea, high fevers, chills, stomach bloating (huge amount of bloating), almost complete lose of appetite and thirst, reddening of the skin around where the pain is, and lack of sleep. She had an appointment scheduled three days from now, but me might end up running her into the emergency room. I thought she might have a kidney stone, but then she started getting the bloating and the redness. I’m really worried. What would cause her to actually redden on the skin around the area of the pain? I’m worried she might have an infection. What do you guys think? I would like to get an idea of what might be wrong with her.
**by the way, the redness is not a rash, it kinda looks like a bruise…

Hi, I am a 21 year old female. Since I was very young I have had digestive system problems. Whenever I eat my GI tract gets upset. Some foods upset it more but it’s not consistent and hard to keep track of. Almost every single bowel movement I have had since I was a little kid has been diarrhea. I urinate very little only two, maybe three times a day and my urine is always yellow because I lose so much water from diarrhea. Last year I had kidney stones. I get very fatigued easily.

I am sick of living with these symptoms so I recently saw a gastroenterologist and had a colonoscopy. My colon was fine and the biopsies came back fine. Blood tests came back fine except for a little "inflammation" whatever that means. The doctors said it was not irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, or celiac disease.

I have an appointment with the gastroenterologist soon and he is going to put me on a medication. Since IBS, celiac disease, and colon diseases have been ruled out I am wondering what else it could be.

I realize there are a million diseases of the digestive system but I was hoping somebody could narrow it down to just a few given my symptoms and the fact my colon is fine.

Thanks.
I was not abused or anything like that. I am stressed but I doubt this is stress linked because even as a little kid I always had diarrhea and during days/weeks/months when I’m not all that stressed I still have diarrhea.

I’ll start from the beginning . In April of 2010 , I started to get hungry , tired , thirsty , and urinated . a lott . I kept getting symptoms of UTIs , kidney stones , and all kinds of stuff . My peditrition tested me for Diabetes , but my sugar was only 120 , even though I had eaten over 3 hours before . Because she didn’t bother to look into anything else , we switched doctors . I then got tested by fasting , and my sugar was 75-85 [I don't remember the exact number , it was in August ] . In October of 2010 I got Appendicitis , and got my appendix removed . I started to have stomach pains again in November , and had a TON of tests done on me . It was my gallbladder , which I had removed in Feb. 2011 . In April 2011 , I started having the same pains . Again -.- . Last week , I passed out in class because of low blood sugar , but by the time the nurse came my body had shot out the sugar I needed , so it was only 117 . I have been getting SO tired lately again , urination every 30-60 minutes , I feel like I always have to eat , I randomly get double vision (without trying) , and my feet always get numb&superr cold ! I’m sorry this is so long , but can someone please help me ?! I just wanna know what’s wrong with mee):
My doctor thinks I’m lying because I’ve had so many weird pains . Andd I dont wanna bug my mom unless it’s something serious .. she didnt even make an appointment for me passing out , so I’d rather not go unless needed . so no answers of "just go to a doctor" pleasee (:

I’ve been having a mild discomfort in between my right shoulder blade. I went to the doctor and got diagnosed with gall stones. I had blood work to check for infections and thankfully no infections were detected. I got referred to a specialist to discuss the issue. I scheduled my appointment for two weeks from today ( he didn’t have anything sooner).

Are their any home remedies to get rid of the stones that have actually worked for anyone? I want surgery to be my last resort.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I went to the E.R. the other day because I was in a lot of pain. I recieved a catscan and they later told me I had two kidney stones. They said one was in the urethra, and the other in my bladder. They gave me pain meds and sent me home. I slept all day and night from the morphine they gave me at the hospital. I woke up the next morning not hurting at all. Two days later I’m still not hurting. They told me to contact a urologist and make an appointment, which I did, but the he is out and they have to call me back. Could I have passed the stones without knowing, or is this normal and should still see the urologist?

I hate my family doctor office. Each and every one of them treat every visit like Dr. House would, which is fine with me, I love House, and I encourage such behavior, but the only problem is, they are wrong, more than half the time. And they treat me personally like i’m a hypochondriac, because I researched my symptoms a little and came up with some possibilities on my own, to see if i really needed to visit them in the first place, and i use the proper terminology — I guess doctors hate that.

This one time, I entered the office, with an ER Discharge slip in my hand that said in very big capital letters. "Lower right quadrant Nephrolithiasis."

Which is the condition of having kidney stones.

The appointment was made over the phone, as it was recommended by the ER to follow up with my primary care, and i followed said instructions

He walks in, sees me holding the discharge slip, unfolded and in clear sight…it’s bright yellow for crying out loud.. I hand it to him, he looks at it, and he sits down and has the gall to say, "What makes you think you have a kidney stone?"

if i wasn’t constipated from the vicodin the ER gave me, i would have literally took a dump on his foot, that’s how much it pissed me off.

Anyway, a few years back, in high school, I had what i now know was whooping cough, or pertussis, and it was clearly in the second phase.

I wasn’t really into researching my symptoms at this point as i had no real interest in medicine at the time, but i described in detail what was happening to me. I had a scratchy feeling in the back of my throat, like little pieces of rice were stuck there, and I’d go into coughing spells almost daily where i would be robbed of all breath, and i would convulse, retch, and vomit uncontrollably in these spells. — and when i was finally capable of inhaling, i would make the "whoop" sound…not so high pitched, as i was in my teens, but very loud..which i now know is exactly what happens in phase 2 of pertussis infection, and this went on for months, until i couldn’t stand it anymore and i went and saw the doctor, he didn’t listen to a word i said, and all he heard was cough…so..he says, bronchitis.

I knew he was wrong, because I’ve had bronchitis before, several times, because my parents smoked 1-2 packs a day between them, this was not bronchitis, but there was no sense in arguing, i was just a kid. I didn’t a spell in the office, and even i did, he was content with sending me out the door anyway

I guess I should feel lucky that the 8-day regimen of a very mild antibiotic, and cough suppressants that he prescribed helped me and diminished the symptoms and allowed my immune system to take over, prevent any real damage, such as brain damage, or seizures that can result from this infection, but if he made the right diagnosis at the time, he would have given me a stronger antibiotic, on 20 day regimen, as well as the damn booster vaccine for pertussis that would ward it off for the next 40 years or so, but no.

i am now faced with the same symptoms once again, and I’ve just entered into phase 2. And i’m going to take my chances at the hospital, i am not going back to my family physician only to deal with the same crap again, and i know it’s going to take every fiber of my being not to be a prick to them.

Yes this is a rant, it needed to come out, but the original question needs to be addressed.
though since i know what i’m doing for this particular situation, i still need to know if i can pursue a different primary so i don’t have to deal with them anymore

when it never seems to be the right time for me to have a 2nd child. My husband says we can start ttc in the Spring, but is NOT ready right now. Also, I have a doctor’s appointment next week to check my kidneys for any more kidney stones. I had a Lithotripsy last summer because I had a 7mm kidney stone that needed to be broken up. I passed most of it, but there may be mini fragments left.
I just want to have a 2nd child and I’m dreading this appointment next week thinking that I’ll just have another year of kidney stone cr@p. How can I trust in God and be more optimistic? Life is just not fair.
Do you think God has a plan for me to have a 2nd child like someday?

I have a large stone in my left kidney. I’m looking for some advice. I’m in the UK. I have an appointment with the kidney doc friday the 19th. It’s too big to zap to pieces or pass. I heard about a Brazilian herb called Quebra Pedra that supposedly breaks the stone up. It literally translates into English as "it breaks stone". Has anybody ever heard about it or used it? I ordered some but they haven’t gotten here yet. Please help me with suggestions.
I’ve had some good answers so far and I thank all of you. A couple of you said you never heard of a stone to big for Lithotripsy. Well, you have now. They won’t like to zap them if they are bigger than 1.5cm (15mm). Mine was 2.8cm about eight months ago. I’m guessing it’s probably close to 4cm by now. I’m in pain almost every day. I’ll be d amn glad to get rid of this thing.

3 weeks ago I woke up to use the bathroom, went back to bed and still felt like i needed to go (no1 not 2) I got up again and on came a severe sharp stabbing pain in my right side pelvic area, it was so bad i was retching to be sick, but nothing came up and my hands were tingling. My initial thought was appendicitis, and thought I would have to go to A+E, I took some painkillers and after about 20 mins the pain eased, then it came back, then eased again. I made an emergency doctors appointment for the following morning and he had a feel and said I felt constipated and thought it was a bowel spasm (after ruling out kidney stones with a urine test), sent me away telling me to up my fibre intake, and to come back if it persisted. Well since then I have had a pretty much constant ache/pinch/pain on my right hand side anywhere from my back to my side (where it is mostly) to stomach by my belly button and hip area. I have been back to the doctors twice more and been prescribed fibregel and have now been booked in for a pelvic and gallbladder scan. I am just wondering if anyone else has had the same or similar symptoms and what happened. This is affecting my daily life and I have never had any health problems before this started 3 weeks ago.
If anyone can help I will be very grateful. Many thanks

I had alot of back pain and blood in my urine about a week ago and went to the doctor. Had two kidney stones, one small and one 8mm. Doc referred me to a urologist about the 8mm one because he said I could not pass it.

However in the meantime, my pain seems to have dissipated. No more blood in my urine and I no longer need the lortabs he gave me. I am positive I did not pass the stone, as I have been straining my urine and only passed a few minuscule sediment which I assumed to be the first small stone. The last pain I had was the norm, back pain and pain in what I think is the tube from my kidney to bladder, that area felt very uncomfortable for the past few days.

My mother told me that I would have some relief when the stone got to my bladder but I cannot find anything online that states that as fact. My appointment with the urologist is not until Friday, today is Wednesday.

Just curious if I might have passed it without knowing or it broken up or perhaps the bladder relief is true.

Thanks for any answers!

For the past three years I have had mild pain in my right lower groin area. Only on the right side and never extreme pain, I would rate the discomfort at maybe a 2 or 3 on a scale of 10 at the worst.

I assumed I had a hernia and was "living with it" until it got worse. Roughly a year ago I decided it was time to get it fixed so I went to a prompt-care to get a referal. The doctor there didn’t feel a hernia so she ordered an ultrasound on my lower abdomen. The ultra sound showed nothing. I was refered to a urologist who said he might have felt a light hernia and that he thought everything else seemed fine. He refered me to a general surgeon. The surgeon examined me and I kind of got the feeling he didn’t detect a hernia, he recommended that I wait until it got worse. This was a year ago. Roughly a month ago I decided I had enough, so I returned and he examined me and set an appointment for a right inguinal surgery.

I still was not certain that I had a hernia so I set an appointment with another surgeon for a second opinion. He told me that he felt no hernia and thought I might have a problem with my right testicle, possibly a variocele.

The problem with this is that I have read 99% of varioceles occur on the left side and I was recently examined by a urologist and made no mention of it.

Sorry for the novel but here are a few other symptoms:

The pain seems to be most prevelant while sitting or laying… not sure if my mind is on other things when I am up and about and that is why I don’t notice it, but I am pretty sure it is worse while driving or resting. This apparently points towards something other than a hernia.

The pain is most prevelant above the right testicle but it has a tendancy to radiate further up the groin towards my hip.

The pain is more of a pulling or dragging sensation as opposed to a sharp pain.

One other monkey wrench to throw in, I have had a history of kidney stones and have had a lythotripsy operation and an old fashion "snatch" operation. The "pain" I am feeling is nothing like the pain I experienced when I couldn’t pass the stones.

I am 27 years old and otherwise very healthy.

Anyone have the same problem?

Whatcha think?

Thanks for your time.

I went into my doctors appointment today so excited to be five weeks pregnant, but the mysterious and terrible pain I have been experiencing under my right ribs turns out to be gall stones! My doctor wants to take my gall bladder out in a few weeks while it is safe for the baby. Anyway, my question is more about what diet I am supposed to be following! I was told to eat bland foods – the blander the better, and little to no fat. Has anyone else been through this, and what type of foods were you able to eat that didn’t cause an attack and didn’t cause you to have morning sickness either. Any advice or simply words of encouragement would be helpful right now! My husband just left for five weeks of training with the US Army Reserves, so I am in need of some kind words. Thanks again!

A year ago in March I had an episode of kidney stones that only lasted for a week of what was intermittent pain never to return again … until possibly now!

With the exception of last night, I have woken up during the night with minor kidney pain which felt like a minor muscle pull, if the kidney had been a muscle that is. In brief the pain was minor and a couple of gulps of water seemed to get rid of the pain.

Please tell me if the stones may be recurring as I await an appointment with the doctor.
I think that the stones were small and that I in no way had the typical-least of all the worst case-of the disease, so my doctor said to watch myself and to report back if things got worse, which they did not.

The pain is centered in my left kidney and I should say that it took a lot more than "a couple of gulps of water" now that I think about your questions more.
