sharp/burning pain in right rib area near the sternum…kidney stones?
I have had a on again, off again sharp, burning pain in my right rib area. I went to the doctors and had blood work and a urinalysis which both came back clean. CT scan revealed a 2mm kidney stone. I’m not sure if this stone is the cause of my pain though. from everything i’ve read kidney stone pain occurs mostly in the back, while my pain is in the front, and feels very close to the surface (my skin in that area and corner of my ribs are tender to the touch). Also, the pain has been pretty stationary…not downward moving as i have read should be the case. Does this sound like kidney stone pain? Please HELP!

Does this sound like kidney stone pain? No. Kidney stone pain begins as a sudden onset, it is severe, it does come and go as the stone moves. The pain can present in the abdomen, but generally not as high as the rib cage, more navel and below, one sided with radiation to lower back one sided or groin, and testicle with males. You may have no urinary symptoms except maybe a feeling of needing to go. Blood may be visible, if not visible, generally it is seen microscopically in a urinalysis. Many times the pain can be so severe that it makes you nauseous and vomiting is not unusual. Position, movement, touching the area does not worsen the pain from the abdominal side. From the flank or back area, touching or more so tapping this area with a closed fist does cause increase pain, but movement and position have no affect. The pain returns as the stone moves down the ureter traveling to the bladder. Other things that can cause pain in the right rib area associated with tenderness is Gallbladder disease, bone or muscular pain or even something like Shingles. Some times you have nerve pain from Shingles before a rash presents. The positive findings on the CT scan could be coincidental…if it is kidney stone pain, you would know, it is the worse pain a person could experience outside of labor. Investigate some of the other things and if your pain changes or some thing new presents, get re-evaluated.
