Ultrasound has a sensitivity of approximately 85%. this means that 15% of individuals with kidney stones will be missed by ultrasound.
Helical CT test is the "gold standard" with sensitivity approaching 100%, but I am sure it is expensive.
Generally, for kidney stones, there is pain along the flanks (the sides) accompanied by nausea/vomiting, blood in the urine, and possible fever/chills if there is an accompanying infection.
