How To Pass A Kidney Stone
I found out via CTscan of my abdomen that I have a 5 mm kidney stone sitting in the bottom of my left kidney. I noticed blood in my urine almost 4 weeks ago and that is when they decided to do the CTscan. I have seen a urologist and he says he is going to give it a week before pursuing other treatments. I was just wondering if other than drinking lots of water is there anyway to help it move along? Does exercise help "release" it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,
Short of manual removal by your doctor (urologist) there is nothing you can do.
I have had and passed a number of stones. Your doctor maybe able to determine what caused yours. He is also as likely not to be able to say at all.
For instance, it is well accepted that calcium supplements can (not always) cause stones to form. But milk and dairy products do not.
It is known some popular weight lifting supplements can cause them to form.
What is not known is why they form at all. Why do the particles not just flush out with everything else. Why do they gather in lump like that…. ?
Now the good news and bad news. You likely have heard horror stories of what Passing a stone is like… Ok, here is the truth… whatever you have heard does not begin to describe the agony. Ok???
This goes way beyond mere gritting your teeth, can you do that for a week?? It can take that long….. I am saying once it starts moving you will have no choice but to aim for the nearest ER. You will be there for sometime, 8-10 hours under morphine and Torodal IV.
Any women that has had both a child and a stone will tell you they would rather give birth everyday than have one more stone in their life…. Percaset is the preferred oral narcotic for pain here. It is a unique class of pain killer. Unique in that very few kinds of pain are actually great enough for it to be used as it was intended…. Kidney stones are one of the few things it is correctly prescribed for.
So… after all that what is the Good news????
Well, if the stone has not passed in the ER (it won’t) You will go home with you veins full of morphine & torodal. It will wear off in about 1 hour… nearly everything you ingest will make you vomit… even the percoset….
Your stomach will be empty from all the vomiting (extreme pain causes a lot of that) you will not be able to eat….
Your momentary salvation, non drug induced is a heating pad!!
It will do no good at all at the initial onset of the stone moving. But when it has moved a good long way and has not yet reached your bladder a heating pad can bring some welcome relief. The stone will still have to travel its course, once in the bladder the worst is well over… Really!!
A 5mm stone is pretty big. Your doctor will likely want to do lithotripsy… Break it up with sound waves, non invasive. It works, kind of like being kidney punched a few hundred times… then you get to pass many small stones over the course of several days. The small ones are not comfortable, but you can function while the process goes on. A little percoset here works well.
Or you can let this thing just move on its own. Cranberry juice may help or not. Having a stone just sitting there is no big deal. An occasional ache, but no big deal. You can be sure of this, one day it will move, yes it will.
Get a heating pad now…. Keep it in your car, briefcase.
More good news… they are not fatal. They very rarely cause any damage aside from some bleeding here and there.
The heartbeat it is gone, you will feel like nothing every happened. It is very weird like that.
Listen to your doctor.
1. You have a stone.
2. You are likely a male. (males get far more stones that women)
3. Your stone will pass. Like it or not.
4. Your doctor can speed the process a couple ways, neither is comfortable.
5. There is no "easy" way out.
6… The real hard part….. relax, don’t worry, it won’t help. The stone has no clue about your concern. Enjoy life , just drink lots of water, about a quart in the morning and a quart after lunch everyday for the rest of your life… It really does help.
Best of luck to you… My own recent ultrasound shows yet another in my right side…. Oh well…

I am soooooooooo glad that I saw your question. My oldest son, Keith (37) has a history of kidney stones. I went on line and bought a holistic remedy for this. IT WORKS EVERYTIME !!! Go to the grocery store and buy a (bunch) of asparagus and a bottle of 2 litre coke. When you come home cook the asparagus, once it is finished you have to blend it into a consistency that you can drink. Drink ALL of it. After you drink all of the asparagus you then drink all the 2 litre bottle of coke and it has to be room temperature. You will notice that you will be urinating "sludge" or it will look like that. That is actually the kidney stone breaking up inside of you. This recipe saved me and my son alot of money in hospital bills and pain on him. There is a chemical reaction between the asparagus and the coke that breaks up kidney stones. By all means, PLEASE share this recipe with all of your male friends to save them the pain and money. Good Luck !!!!

Drink lots of fluids, which will pass through your kidneys and maybe pass the stone, however it will be painful. It may be to large of a stone to pass on its own though.!

Skating has given you the best answer. I can add a little to it.
First, there is nothing you can take that will break up or dissolve stones, particularly not calcium stones. You don’t know what type you have until you pass it, so save yourself the agony of drinking asparagus! LOL
I think the worst pain occurs after it passes out of the kidney. My experience has been that once it gets farther down, that eases up. I don’t know that actually passing it is painful – experiences vary on that.
But do be prepared for some pain once it descends and do go to the ER. Morphine is fantastic! Drink plenty of water – not only will that help to flush it out but it gives you something in your stomach to puke up. Dry heaves suck!
And if you’re not already doing this, plan on being glued to a water bottle for the rest of your life. Drink as much as you can – recommended amounts are around 2-3 quarts per day. I never did this but have started to do so and it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.
My "Rocky" is 2mm and I thought I might have passed him (it’s been 3 weeks since diagnosis), but this morning I came down with back pain so I think he’s acting up. I’m about to head home to soak in the bath (to relieve bladder/uti symptoms).
Good luck!
