I suspect I have a kidney stone. What can I do to relieve the symptoms while waiting for it to pass?
I know I have to wait this thing out. I’ve been noticing small symptoms set in for over a week, and now I’m feeling a swollen sensation in my side and belly, along with discomfort. Also, I’ve been having a large amount of bowel movements which are followed by an achy sort of pain on the right side of my back.
While I’m waiting for this kidney stone to go through it’s stages of passing, what can I do to make my life more comfortable? Thank you ![]()
No, no doctor. They always just tell me to drink water and cranberry juice, so I decided to handle it myself, and only go if it got much worse.

tarochka – A good doctor would not simply tell you to take cranberry juice and water. FIRST, the most important thing is to make an accurate diagnosis. Stones in the kidney can be anywhere in size from a grain of sand to 3 inches (7-8 cm). Not all stones can or will be able to pass through the soft, thin-walled ureter to the bladder. Stones can and do cause severe pain. Often diagnosis is confirmed by a simple X-ray which shows the calcium stone(s). The wrong pain medicine can make the pain worse. You need to strain all your urine, perhaps through a tea strainer, and save (dry) anything that looks like grains of stone. You could be an emergency admission to the hospital. Do not fight seeing another doctor if you did not like the last one who treated you.

Take pain medication. Hopefully you’ve been to the doctor already? Feel better soon.
