I have just found out I have Ovarian Cysts…what the heck do I do now?
I went to my local ER the other night bcause I was having really terrible back pain and felt like my whole body was going to explode when I peed. I thought for sure it was a kidney stone. While I was there they did a cat scan and told me it was a stone and a kidney infection. I was given some antibiotics and pain meds then told to see my regular doctor as soon as possible. So I went to my family dr the next day and she told me that a kidney stone was not the only thing they saw on the CT. It also says in the report that the right ovary has several large cycts. My dr told me to see my gyno within a week, and now I can’t get an appiontment that soon. I have noticed before they told me about the cysts that I have pain during and after sex, a lower backache all the time, and I constantly feel like I have a bladder infection…that really awful buring sensation. Are those symptoms coming from these cysts? What should I expect when I do get to see my gyno?
Crysti: So, what you are saying is that the cysts are what causes you to have a period…(wrong.) If I have several of them, then they will pop them and tell me how to not get them again…which in your describtion would mean I won’t ever be getting a period again, right? Let me educate you on a period. Periods come from the lining of your uterus shedding itself if the egg your ovary produces does not get fertilized with sperm and implanted into that lining. But, at any rate thank you for trying.

Ovarian cysts are fairly common and for the most part they don’t cause any problems and they go away on their own. Sometimes though they grow and don’t go away and when that happens you may require medication or, in bad cases, surgery. I don’t believe that your feeling of having a bladder infection or the back pain has anything to do with the cysts. The paid during and after sex is probably not caused by the cysts either but it could. Cysts can cause some pain in some cases.
Cysts are normally not an emergency so if you have to wait a little longer to get into your GYN it’s okay. Only your GYN will be able to tell you what is causing the cysts and what to do about them. Usually they do an ultrasound, usually a vaginal ultrasound, to see the cysts and what kind of cysts they are. More tests may be required. It could be something simple that is cleared up by going on birth control pills or perhaps it could be due to something like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). Quite likely your GYN will want you to go on birthcontrol to stop new cysts from forming. Cysts are formed every month when you ovulate but they go away on their own. Sometimes though they start to grow. BC pills will prevent new cysts and can "remove" existing cysts.
Your GYN may also check you for STDs and infections that could cause your symptoms.
Since cysts are so common and usually harmless I wouldn’t worry yet. Most likely it’s nothing to worry about. I am prone to getting ovarian cysts and have had many. It has not caused any problems and it’s just something I get. I don’t even notice it.
Good luck

The cysts are what give you your period. They fill up with blood and when they pop you get your period. If you have several large cysts then they will most likely pop them and tell you how to prevent them from coming back. If you can’t get into the the gyno that soon then call the Dr. and tell them that and see what they say or you could go back to the ER but I would deffinately reccomend calling the Dr. bc that’s who told you to go to the gyno. Don’t worry everything will turn out okay. (: Best of luck ~Crysti (:

I would suggest going back to your doctor, and seeing if they can get you in somewhere a little sooner, or at least assure you the matter isn’t so urgent. Speak to them while you are there, and tell them your concerns, and make sure you ask about what to expect from the gyno visit.
Your symptoms are all fairly common for people suffering from ovarian cysts. If you are terribly concerned, and the pain becomes too much, don’t hesitate in seeking emergency medical assistance.
