How to prevent kidney stones/ovarian cyst…?
I had a VERY serious kidney infection when i was 17. I was in the hospital for over two weeks and now my kidney is all scared up.
Then when I was pregnant with my first son I started getting kidney stones…they have had to go in and remove them twice.
Now after having another child (who is now almost 2) I have kidney stones for the 5th or 6th time. I have 2 stones in the right and 2 stones in the left and one that is passing that appears to be from the right kidney.
I do not drink a lot of pop or fast food. I hate milk and don’t drink much OJ. My dr. did say that she thinks they are calcium, but she has referred me to a urologist to help me furthur.
ALSO I found out I also have an ovarian cyst on my right ovary which as a little over 2 inches.
I know that doctors go to school to know all about these problems, but I’m wondering if anyone out there has PERSONALLY had a similar problem and ways to prevent this?
All I know is I am sick of being in pain, this time it has been almost a month and my doctor is so picky about writting pain medicine perscriptions that I’ve ended up in the ER 4 times already…and she had an issue with that…hello…in PAIN!
Anyone with similar problems please advise. Thanks!

You are at the point a urologist or internal medicine doctor will be the most helpful in finding out what causes you to form multiple stones and what you need to do to help avoid them. In some cases you can have a metabolic disorder that can cause them. Sometimes it’s not what you eat, but how much you drink that is the problem. If you don’t drink enough fluid to be going to the bathroom every 3-4 hours, the urine concentrates and things like the calcium and uric acid have time to collect and form stones. You may also have a problem with the drainage system from the kidney to the bladder that isn’t allowing the kidney to drain properly as well. A urologist can do tests that will give you a much better picture of the situation, and help nail a cause. Until then, there isn’t anything you can really do. Since your doctor thinks the stones are calcium based, you would want to limit your intake of those foods high in calcium. Although most folks think milk and dairy, there are other foods to watch as well. Leafy greens like collards can actually contain more calcium than a glass of milk, and tofu is another source folks tend not to think about. It’s the same with the ovarian cyst. I would assume you’ve been checked for the usual infections that cause problems, and don’t have those. In that case, it can be really hard to say exactly why you form an ovarian cyst, only that you tend to do it. Ovaries form ovulation cysts about every other month under normal circumstances, that’s what they are supposed to do. Sometimes they just get carried away with it. The usual treatment there is to supress the ovulation, and since you are pregnant, you haven’t been ovulating lately anyway. The cyst has been there for a while, growing. Once you deliver your baby, they may suggest you go on the pill to help prevent other cysts forming. I’m sorry you are in so much pain. Doctors are cautious about the pain medications because so many of them are addictive, and their effectiveness tends to decrease as you take them for long periods of time or repeatedly. And truthfully, I think some regular doctors underestimate how painful a kidney stone can be, or a cyst, unless they have personally suffered. The urologist on the other hand, should be a lot more responsive to your needs and better able to help you find a solution. I’ve only had one, mercifully- also shortly after a delivery. I have a kidney defect involving the ureter between one kidney and the bladder, so I am at higher risk. My regular doctor wasn’t of much help, honestly- but the urologist sure was. He helped discover the defect, which also explained why I had always had such a problem with kidney infections all my life. Like you, I spent two weeks in a hospital as well, in my early teens, due to an infection. Now that I know what the trouble is, I know to be aware of how much I drink and how things are going, and I have been able to avoid a repeat of the stone and cut the number of infections way down. I wish you luck, and get in to see the urologist as soon as you can.

I’ve had ovarian cysts, and yeah, they are extremely painful. I had anti-biotics, but no pain medication. I don’t think you can prevent them, but if it is any consolation, mine never came back and it has been several years.
I work with someone who had kidney stones. Her doctor told her she was drinking too much coffee and not enough plain water. He told her to drink a lot of water, so drink 8 glasses a day.
Good luck. You sound like you have been through a rough time. I hope you feel better soon.

I have a large ovarian cyst too, they’ve given me mild pain killers and told me to either wait it out (because cyst are supposed to go away with your next period) or I can get surgery to get it removed if it gets too unbearable. You should go to a different doctor and ask if you can get pain killers, because I just cannot handle this pain… even with the pain killers it’s STILL horrible. I hope everything gets better for you too!
