Now they’ve given him a painkiller but he still has to wait for radiographic evidence etc. to confirm, however he is a doctor and we know that type of flank pain is the defining feature. I am in my thirties and my brother and I both have the same diet high in animal fat and lots of soda. Other than eliminating the soda, is it advisable to become vegetarian, or is the likelihood of my also getting a stone already high and changing diets won’t matter anyway?

I’ve never been the type to drink a lot of plain or even flavored water, however I do generally drink a lot of fluids. My friend got a kidney stone at the age of 20 and now again a little over a year later. He’s always drank more water than me, although he also on occasion drinks lots of Monster and other energy drinks.

Does proper vitamin balance and diet help avoid this problem? What is good for you? Juice, Tea, Milk, or only water? It seems like I’ve been told each of those can contribute to kidney stones.

I developed a kidney stone recently. The doctor told me that I need to change my diet and to drink a lot of water. I’m avoiding sugar, grease, fried foods, anything that can make the stone increase in size until it passes. With the drastic change of diet, will I most likely lose weight? I’m 18 by the way.

I suffer from kidney stones and diverticulitis, both very painful and the foods that are good for one condition, are bad for the other and vice versa. I’d like some advice from either nutritionists or people who suffer from both or at least one and have knowledge of the other. I know I need a high fiber diet for the diverticulitis but some of the high fiber foods can cause kidney stones so its quite frustrating.

Hi there, I am currently 25 weeks pregnant, anemic, have acid reflux, high blood pressure, severe constipation and kidney stones to boot. I am having a really hard time finding food to eat that satisfy me. I am pretty much eating cereal for most of my meals because I get so frustrated about food. I don’t know what is good for me, bad for my illnesses and pregnancy, and what will prevent kidney stones from forming. All the research I do conflict with each other. So some advice would be nice. Please help me.

Hey I’m on a health insurance plan where tier 1 medicine tier 2 and tier 3 costs different. Is potassium citrate(the medicine used to prevent kidney stones) tier 1 , 2 or 3?

I went to my primary today [income based clinic] for a followup from my ER visit, brought the stone assuming they’d want to test it but the doctor did nothing of the sort.
I told him I wanted to know what it was made of so I could make diet and/or lifestyle decisions to prevent more and he said it didn’t matter. I told him I’d read most are calcium and that testing can be done for that but he insisted that the likelihood of it being composed of calcium was almost zero.
.. which I also read most stones are made of.
So when I got around to asking the doctor if I could drink or smoke cigarettes at all I was already skeptical of the validity of what he was telling me.
He responded that I could never again in my life consume alcohol and needed to quit smoking immediately.

Now I’m not claiming to know anything about the condition from what I’ve read online, nor am I arguing that smoking or having a beer is good for my health but I would like to have a second opinion on the matter.
I’m 22 and just saying I’d like to go out and have a drink on occasion.
Furthermore, should I try finding another doctor to test the stone?

Ive endured kidney stones, invasinve dental treatment and tooth abscess’s, all in the last 2 months, on top of that, now everythings pretty much sorted, i feel ill all the time.

I get up for work and my stomach feels tight, i cant eat in the morning for fear of being sick.
When i gt to work it subsides slightly, but its always nagging, a weird feeling in the stomach mainly, as well as jaw ache and general "down-ness".
It usually gets worse before i go to bed, where my stomach feels shaky, like someones stuck a vibrator in my belly, for lack of a better analogy.

Also sometimes i notice my nerves arent as steady as they were, and i shake slightly.

Im only 19 :( .

Ive manned up a bit and just dealt with it, but i just wanted to know if it could be from feeling generally run down? I didnt eat hardly anything for a month whilst i had kidney stones, and the painful dental procedures and ailments have made me scared to bite down, so have restricted my diet. Im trying to get at least 3 fruit and veg in a day, usually in the form of smoothies or juices. Recon keeping this up will help out with feeling generally run down?

Okay. So, i’ve had a kidney stone before… And My Dr says sinse my mother gets them, I will probably recieve more. And they never tested the one I had to see the cause… so, I don’t even know what could help to prevent it. My pain is in the lower right side. Hurts like someone just stabbed me or something quite close to it. Definitely can’t sleep through it… It woke me up. No matter how I lie, it still hurts. Makes you wanna cry, it hurts so bad. I’m 16. Thought it was rare for a teenager to have kidney stones. :/ Any way to get rid of this pain? …or do you have any ideas on what else it could be? Though, I’m almost positive it’s a kidney stone. Oh. And I feel like vomiting.

Last October while I was at homecoming I complained about my back hurting the whole night. Then I got home and tried to sleep and the pain had moved to my side and it was pretty much unbearable. Like the worst pain I had ever felt in my whole life. Went to the hospital and the doctor said I had a kidney stone. Got my meds, passed it and all was fine until about a week ago, I woke up with the same unbearable pain in my side. Go to the hospital ANOTHER kidney stone but this time bigger. I dont understand what is causing it? I drink water and occasionally soda but I quit drinking diet soda after the first kidney stone. The nurse said my calcium level was normal so the only thing I can think of is it being hereditary but I dont know because no one on my moms side gets them and my dad is adopted. Is there anything else that causes kidney stones?? I’ve been drinking tons of water and cranberry juice lately. Is there anything else to help prevent them??

For the past few days I’ve had a strange sharp irritation in my penis, I thought I might have a kidney stone stuck in my urethra. This morning while I went to the toilet, my urine stream stopped for a moment and a small black stone roughly 4-5mm in size came out. However, I still have the same feeling from before. Could any of these have happened?
A. The stone was stuck in my urethra and the feeling I have is just cause it hurt the inside.
B. The stone broke and there is still more in my urethra.
C. The stone is unrelated and I have a Urinary Track Infection.
D. I passed the stone, my urethra is damaged but it will heal.

Note: What I found strange, is that while passing this stone, I did not feel any pain. Only a little bit afterwards. Honestly, I’m confused. I had a strange feeling in my urethra, I passed this stone, and I still have a strange feeling. I’m hoping that I’ve successfully passed the stone and that my urethra needs to heal. But I still don’t know why I felt no pain. Any insight as to what could be happening would be greatly appreciated.

Side note: I am 16 years old and I have never had a kidney stone, however my diet certainly does nothing to prevent them.

I am "turning a new leaf" in my life. Trying to make healthier choices because I have realized that I am 20 and already have too many health problems to worry about. I don’t want my next 60 plus years on this earth to be miserable and filled with doctor appointments and prescriptions. So I am making some changes. I’m starting small so I don’t overwhelm myself and give up. I am a HUGE pop drinker. I used to drink mainly Mountain Dew with a Pepsi here and there. Then a few months ago I started drinking more Diet Pepsi than Mountain Dew to cut down on the calories. But still, 2 twenty ounce Diet Pepsi’s at work then maybe a Mountain Dew or 2 when I come home is NOT GOOD. And to add to that I have kidney stones often. Probably due to excess pop but doctors seem to think its due more to calcium. Anyway after all the explanation my question is, Can I switch to drinking green tea? I love Lipton Diet Green Tea Mixed Berry. I have researched and some say it is better for you than pop, some say it’s not and to go buy the actual leaves and brew it yourself. But honestly, for someone as busy as I am and with limited "quick" options for satisfying drinks (I will drink water but I despise drinking water while eating. It is very unsatisfying to me.) what can I do?! I figured I would go with green tea because it has benefits but do I really need to go through all the trouble of brewing it myself or will the bottle stuff do? Some insight please!! Hope this isn’t all too confusing! lol

I’ve decided to add decaf green tea into my diet. I have an entire box of the Salada brand and I might look into loose teas once I’m done with the box. Anyway I have a few questions

1. I read that too much green tea can cause kidney stones. That’s not something I’m interested in dealing with. Lol how common is this negative affect in over-consumption? And what qualifies as "too much" green tea? I’ve read that 4-6 cups a day gives optimal benefits. So I’m like, damn how much is too much? I really need to know

2. Piggy backing off of my first question, how much green tea should you drink daily? I’ve read 4-6 cups but will you get the health benefits with fewer cups a day? Also, are these teacup measurements or 8 oz. cups? Is there a difference?

3. Is it true that drinking it with meals interferes with absorption of nutrients in food, so you should drink it in between meals? How long after/before eating should you drink the tea so it wont mess with nutrients from food?

4. Should you prepare it a certain way? Is it true that you should only heat the water and not boil it?

5. Any other tips or things I should know about green tea?

Oh and how difficult is it to deal with loose teas? I don’t even know where to start with that…

Okay that’s all. :)

Ok, so I played basketball for like 3 hrs in 95 degree heat on Saturday. Was pretty dehydrated after, but was okay and recovered. The next day I went to pee and the right side of my bladder had these sharp stabbing pains! It’s not up near the kidneys.. it’s below the belly button to the right close to the groin. It feels a somewhat better after I’m done, but still has a sharp lingering pain all the time. Then when I have to pee again (i guess as the bladder is full) the intense pain comes back! It hasn’t gotten any better and is now Wednesday. Went to the doctor today and they found no blood or infection in the urine. Gave me flexoril and said it’s probably a pulled muscle. By the way, I don’t have any history with kidney stones but my dad has had gout and uric acid stones sometimes. Anyway, the only diet changes lately have been drinking coffee and taking Pepcid. Thanks for you help!! :D

I have some bad kidney stones, I had surgery to put in a stent, and next week they take it out. I am taking 5 prescription drugs the dr. gave me, and the week after the 2nd surgery I have to do a sound blast treatment. I am getting married in 3 weeks from now, and we already booked our 2 week honeymoon. Am I going to be OK?

What should I be eating or not eating to help me? When they discharged me frm the hospital, they said normal diet and activities as tolerated.

has anyone had a stent? i still feel very weak, and worse then before i went to the dr.

plus, is there a possibility I wont be able to get pregnant or have a pregnancy without stones?

I woke up this morning, fed my dog (pure bred Pembroke Welsh Corgi) her regular cup of dry dog food, mixed with a few cut up baby carrots. After showering, and right before I was about to take her outside, I noticed that she had pooped A LOT on the carpet. It wasn’t exactly diarrhea. It was more like half-solid, half-diarrhea. I was able to pick up the poop in a paper towel and clean the carpet rather easily(if that gives you any clue to what consistency it was lol!!). It also looked like she had peed somewhere on the floor by the bathroom. My dog NEVER goes inside the house. She is always very good about telling me when she has to go outside. So immediately the ‘alarm bells’ went off so to speak. I took her outside and she pooped very small amounts of half-solid poop. Her pee looked completely normal. In retrospect, she was moving kind of slow this morning, but we ran a little this morning after she went to the bathroom (just from the street outside of my apartment to my back door) but she seemed fine then. She was also very responsive to me petting her and giving her attention.

My corgi is going onto 7 years old. Ever since I can remember she’s always had kidney stones off and on (due to the amount of protein in her old food and diet). About two years ago, she was put on a special dog food that helps her to avoid the development of kidney stones (Royal Canin Veterinary Diet, SO 14, dry dog food). She is not allowed to have anything with high protein: meats, peanut butter, etc,. She is also on hormone pills for her incontinence, which started around a year ago. My vet told me that many small pure-bred dogs develop incontinence from being spade or neutered. I wish I could remember the name of her medication, but I’m at work, and the pill bottle is at home!

Point is, I would give her the rice and chicken "cure" for her diarrhea, but she isn’t allowed to have meat. My mom told me that Daphne (my dog) may have just had a little bit of diarrhea from eating carrots for the first time in a long time. I’m just starting to worry… I want to make she she’s OK. After her having a slew of health problems these past few years, every sign of her being sick sends me off the deep-end.

Help/advice, please? And yes, there are several emergency vets around the area that are open nearly all weekend, so I definitely have access to a vet if need be. THANKS!

Any reasons for this? My illness seems to be a mystery to all docs. No matter what I eat, I ALWAYS get dizzy and lightheaded right after. My stomach and whole body is also almost always inflammed as well. I was diagnosed with colitis and have a bad time with kidney stones forming as well (stones to big to pass). I am a 26 year old male that has a clean a diet as one can you. Basically all whole foods. I am desperately looking for advice as this seems to be a mystery to all docs. I though maybe diabetes? blood pressure, etc, but doc seems to say nope.
