Well,I had thyroid cancer last year. Thyroid removed for papillary cancer. There are 4 kinds but this one is the most treatable/curable. As soon as you have the surgery, you will start thyroid replacement medication which you will take for life. Adjustment at first is necessary so it is important to keep in touch with the endocrinologist to monitor your mood and blood levels. Most likely you will have RAI treatment a month or so after your surgery. This involves diet.isolation for three days and lots of time alone. There is a web site for Thyroid Cancer patients and a forum to ask lots of questions. People who have been through it can offer advice and encouragement. After the RAI,you may feel tired for awhile but after that, the journey is better. You are faced with 2 surgeries so you may need some extra weeks just to get back to normal.
Good Luck to you and your recovery.

my mum had her thyroid removed in 2006 due to cancer, luckily it was caught before it had spread all through her lymphatic system as the endocronologist at the time told us that many patients also have to have their lymph nodes removed… she was home from hospital after 5 days with nothing more then a dressing around her neck, she did not need chemo therapy and has regular checks, but so far no abnormalities have been detected.
i have had my gall bladder removed, not a big operation, you are right after about 2 weeks!

Hello,, having gall stones is so painful, and I speak from experience. Only thing I ever had worse than gall stones was a baby lol. But the surgery, isn’t bad at all. I have 3 really little scars from where they took my gall bladder out. They use lazer surgery now, so it’s not really that bad anymore. You’ll be good as new in a few weeks. My sister had to have her thyroid removed because hers just stopped working. But the operation will be pretty much the same. The only thing about having your thyroid taken out is that it’s so close to your voice box. They told my sister there was a 50% chance that she might not be able to speak after her surgery. But she was fine,, she was in hospitol for about 4 days,, she’s fine now. She has to take thyroid medicine now but other than that she feels so much better. Good luck with your surgery and I’ll keep you in my prayers

I just had my thyroid removed on the 14th and lymphnodes removed as well due to thyroid cancer. You will have a sore throat and close to no voice for the first couple of days, and I found that drinking hot/warm liquids worked best for me the cold stuff just made no difference but warm chicken broth felt very good. Was in hospital just over night felt good other than some soreness pain to be expected but nothing that can’t be handled, after leaving the hospital I didn’t even use any pain meds. I am even back to work full time as of 30th. So recovery went very well although I still have to do the 131 radioactive iodine and full body scan next. The incision will be covered with a glue adhesive that will peel off when ready and you can shower the flowing day after being released from hospital hope you have a speedy recovery!

you got great answers, I just wanted to give you two sites to visit….www.thyca.org is the national association for thyroid cancer survivors, and has great info on the low iodine diet for your radiation treatment, etc. also, yahoo health groups has a board for thyca that has been invaluable to me.
my recovery was good, getting my synthroid to the right levels was what took the longest….I had to stay in the hospital an extra day due to low calcium levels, and I am two years out, and no signs of cancer. good luck and good health.
