Kidney Stone Pain
When it comes to kidney stone pain, I’m afraid I’ve had my share of it over the last 20 years or so, with dozens of stones (I’ve even had double stones, one on each side at the same time!).
I’ve pretty much "perfected" what works for me to control the pain, and, more recently, how to get rid of the kidney stone itself relatively pain free (click here).
Take a look at the monster kidney stone I recently passed (the photo above has NOT been retouched). This stone measures roughly 10mm x 9mm x 8mm. If you don’t know, this is HUGE (most doctors think you can only pass a stone up to about 6mm).
In the end, despite the size of this behemoth I passed it relatively pain free. Let me repeat that, I passed this monster stone relatively PAIN FREE by using this kidney stone relief program.
And I’ll tell you how I did it.
Basically, my technique consists of the following:
- Alka Selzer – I know this goes against the acid "solution" (i.e. drinking lots of lemonade to dissolve stones), but it helps during the nauseous phase and when my stomach is hurting. It seems to help then the kidney stone pain increases as well
- Ibuprofin – Again, I am NOT a doctor and am NOT recommending or prescribing this, but once when a botched kidney stone lithotripsy went bad, I ended up with a blood clot that hurt worse than the kidney stone. I was admitted into the hospital with pain so bad I was coming in and out of consciousness. The solution? A mega SHOT of Ibuprofen (we’re talking about a seriously large dose). No morphine, to my initial dismay … but it actually killed the pain, almost immediately). I take more than the recommended dose, up to twice the dose (I also wait at least an hour after taking Alka Selzer before taking it).
- Heat – This is a godsend for me. With a hot bath or an electric heating pad, I can deal with just about any stone pain. Only once did heat not work for me, I don’t know why. I put the heat right on the source of the pain (sometime I’ll tell you about the stone I had in a New Jersey seaside B&B, with &only a small, public shower … ).
- Drugs – I’ve tried a lot of them. In the ER, before I learned to control my pain, they’ve always given me morphine. The last time, several years ago, it just didn’t do the trick. It whacked out my mind, but the pain seemed just as intense. Tylenol with codeine does nothing for my pain. Oxycontin works great for me … 5 mg with ibuprophin works most of the time, sometimes I take 10 mg if the pain is bad. Again (again), you need to take the drugs your doctor prescribes for you, I’m just telling you what works for me.
- Accupuncture – This works well for pain and for getting rid of the stone. This has always helped me pass the stone, usually within a day or so.
A New Development In My Kidney Stone Life
For my last 2 stones, just recently passed (including the monster stone shown above), I read about a new way of first reducing the size of a stone quickly, and then helping induce its removal (I am willing to try anything to reduce the pain and pass the stone. Well, pretty much anything).
Basically, it uses some common-day products (the key is how you use them). The concept made sense to me, so I tried it.
I am happy to say that it appeared to work for both of my stones. The first large one passed within 36 hours of following the instructions. There was no pain during that time, and the stone passed with just a final blip of pain (remember, this was a 10 mm stone!). The second one (6-7 mm) passed, with almost no pain at all, within about 24 hours.
Though 2 experiences does not make a total believer out of me, I will follow this system for every kidney stone from now on. You can learn how to get this program by clicking here dissolve your kidney stone.
